Thanks Matt; a 16" one is getting a good size. They are around but a lot of them are made in China and I am after Aussie made ones. The made in China ones work fine but I would just like the home grown ones is all.

Jees, it'd be getting hard to find 'em made in Aus these days, wouldn't it Jeff?

Re: WTB old Camp Ovens
Thanks Tom; very much appreciated.
Come August roast goat in one would be a bit of alright.
The one I use now was my dad's and I would hate something to happen to it and that is why I would like to get a hold of another old one or two.
Jeff
Yeah mate it is and to my knowledge this company is one of/if not the only Aussie company that still makes them. http://billmansfoundry.com.au/camp-ovens/ I would really like a 15" one some day but they are rather expensive but are of very good quality. You can even get them personalised with your name or whatever on them. They would make great hand me downs to our kids.Moreton wrote:Jees, it'd be getting hard to find 'em made in Aus these days, wouldn't it Jeff?

Here you go Jeff, Metters was an Aussie company I believe. They made some brilliant stoves.

Thanks Tom. A Metters is one I am after. Ebay prices have usually been going very high but just tonight one went for a good price but I would have had problems getting it as we have a bit on in the next couple of weeks so I didn't bid on it. Freight prices can be very high also. Some of the Aussie camp ovens go for really crazy prices on ebay.

Thanks mate. I have thought about the shops in your little town but they may have their prices a bit high but ya never know. We will hopefully be heading down to there at the end of the month for a look around. I am hoping the Boston Ivory on the Gostwhyck Chapel will have turned crimson so I can get some good photos (if we aren't too late and miss it). We might be able to catch up when we are down there.

There's one down here that is extremely reasonable and the owner makes a note of avoiding things like ebay. He's retired and does it as a hobby. Gary Burgess is his name if you ever go into his shop.Stickbow Hunter wrote:Thanks mate. Jeff your just far to far away to send any, but I'm sure you must have a couple of Army Surplus stores in your area, for that's where you can get a good quality cheap one, or try a Sunday market if you have them up your way..........Bill

Re: WTB old Camp Ovens
Yeah Bill I can buy the made in China ones which work just fine but I want genuine Aussie made! My mate Dennis La Varenne who now lives in NSW goes to Vic regularly and he just might get a job to pick up an oven for me. He will be up this way for a hunt later in the year and could deliver it - I haven't asked him yet though. I'm keeping my eyes open for one up here no worries.

Will keep my eyes peeled, mate. I'll put up a notice on the board here on The Island, you find all kinds of things that way as there are lots of the original folk who moved here when it was sub-divided back in the '60's who are now moving on and will sell what they can instead of taking with them.
Rest assured, with luck, camp oven roast goat will be on the menu at the "Cunnamulla fine dining outdoor restaurant"!

Re: WTB old Camp Ovens
Mate,
Do you only want an old one. If you have a look at the Furphy Foundry web site. They make up to a 15 inch. Also heard you could get them cast with your name on the lid for a bit extra. There are some on E-Bay at the moment. This is a multi generational, Australian bussiness from what i understand. The old one's are very sought after if you can get them. The company used to make water carts in yester year.
Cheers Jayson.

Re: WTB old Camp Ovens
Thanks Jayson. Yeah Furphy Camp Ovens were good Aussie ovens until about 1999 when they started to get them made in China. Of course the ovens still work ok but I just want Aussie made. Some of their old water carts were amazing.
I nearly bought a ripper old oven on ebay recently but I knew it would be difficult to collect it so didn't bother.

I know every day we are forced to cop 2nd class product made over seas because there isn't an alternative but I would still pay 10-15% more if I know it is OWNED and MADE completely in Australia! Australian companies who walk this path are just as bad as selling out to a foriegn owner

Re: WTB old Camp Ovens
A lot of waste disposal places (tips) are now pulling out anything they think might be of use, and they sell them for very small prices. You always see odd bits of timber, bikes, gold clubs you name it basically. It might be worth a try checking out some of these places, or at least letting them know as they keep an eye out some of these places when they know its a quick sale.
Worth a try.
Worth a try.
Re: WTB old Camp Ovens
I actually saw 2 yesterday in an op shop but they looked to be only around the 12'' mark, one was $4 and the other $8. Didn't see where they were made.
