Just finished tanning a few Fallow Deer skins me and Chuck harvested in this years Rutt. Nothing special just brought the chemical mix one and followed the directions. Although I did stuff up and dried them to much before adding the oil so they ended up a little stiff after the softening process. They should make good wall hangers though. Just have to cut them to shape first. Thought you would like a few pics.

Re: A FEW SKINS
Try stropping them over a round top post like the bollards councils put around parks etc
It breaks the grain of the leather and softens them a lot. Be gentle as you can tear the
skin if you go to hard

Re: A FEW SKINS
Nicely done Wayno.
It has also been, many a year since I last tanned a hide, a couple of Goat skins, one made into a back quiver and a big old Nanny skin for a floor Mat/Rug.
If you can pick up an old washing machine it takes a-lot of the hard work out in the solution soaking period.
(never to be used for anything else again.)

Thanks fellas. It has been a long time since I have done one as well and now I know why you don't see many of them about, its a lot of time and effort that's for shore. Matt yes mate I tried that along with everything else and they have softened a little but not enough. I will remember next time in ten years time when I do another one. He He.
