BroadHead Choices

#1 Post by Gene-o » Tue Dec 08, 2009 9:59 pm

Hi guys and girls, just got a quick question for you all.
Has anybody tried the WOODSMAN three bladed broardhead at 125g or 190g on any of our feral game?
Mainly good size boars, scrubbers or buff bulls? I do know they are used a bit in the states on softer skined animals.
Any info would be great.
thanks.

I've used the Woodsman 125 grain glue-on broadhead, combined with a 75 grain steel adaptor and 100 grain brass insert in a carbon arrow, to kill a boar and a sow.

My personal experience afield with various broadheads has led me to the conclusion that a two-blade broadhead is preferable to a three-blade one, for the sake of extra penetration being more important to me than any bloodtrail advantages a three-blade broadhead might afford sometimes, when hunting pigs and larger game.

However, I know that Tommo and Dan are very successful with three-blade broadheads on pigs.

Cheers,

Ben

Woodsman heads are one of the best three blade heads made but I would only use two blade heads on the Australian game you suggested....Glenn....

Just out of interest, is the difference in penetration when using three blades as opposed to two blades less of a problem when shot out of a compound?
Lately, if life were treating me any better, I'd be suspicious of it's motives!

NO. Bill Baker had a box full of failed broadheads that failed on game up on the Basalt and a lot of them were three blade broadheads, some of them failed miserably and mostly shot out of compounds....Glenn....

i agree with ben, two blade for what you are talking about.
i have used two bladers for everything but i am considering getting some big 160gr snuffers for use on smaller game like foxes and cats that have smaller kill zones and hence a greater chance of a marginal shot. penetration won't be a problem so more is better in that case.

Personally you cannot beat a quality 2 blade broadhead esp on our larger aussie game,we strongly discourage 3 blades on any of hunts in the cape due to there poor performance in penertrating and most are using high poundage compounds
cheers

I use the Abowyer Whitetail broadheads...they are 1 1/2" wide and 2 3/8" long and single bevel. I have tried 3 blade - snuffers and Wensel Woodsmans and they performed marginal on some large animals. Have used 2 blade for well over 35 years now and they work every time. Magnus 1's are another big tough head - the 160 grain heads are hard to beat.

I have not seen them but I hear Blackstump have released 3 new heads, VENTED IRONBARK (100g). BUSHRANGER SOLID (180g ) BUSHRANGER VENTED (160g). I was thinking of getting a few each to see what they are like.

You could always try Dr Ed Ashby's new 300gr two blade broadhead..about US$30 a head. These must be the new .375H&H of the broadhead world I reckon.
