Best longbow to buy....?

#1 Post by sevenmil » Wed Jan 22, 2014 9:55 pm

Thinking about having a laminated longbow made, but I just don't who is the best person to talk to. I have read a little about Norseman and Razor, but wanted to see what people think?

Who is known for making strong, durable bows here in Australia ?

You can add Gringa Bows to your list as well. See the Bowyers forum.

As Jeff says Rod from Gringa makes a great bow and is a great guy.Nick from Norseman is a premier maker with a wealth of knowledge on all things traditional.
I have never had a complaint or problem about my bows either, and give a warranty with each bow .Facebook page through razorbows.com will show some albums of bows.

Can do Aussie timbers or exotic all supplied by reputable bowyer suppliers, carbon backed if you like, antler and horn overlays are available, can also provide Australian hand made matching knives too. Just click the link at the bottom of my posts to check it out. Cheers Sean.

Hi mate,
I am quite familiar with Nick Linterns bows as I have shot a number of different ones made by Nick for other guys who have been kind enough to let me shoot them and one of Nicks that really stood out and I want one! was a 45# Berserker Longbow.
I am an average archer nothing flash but I was shooting 10's straight away with it!
The bow's owners were all complementary.
I have seen but not shot big bob's bows and the workmanship was very good too.
Hope thats of some help.

Sevenmil where are you based and where can you travel too. If you can get to the Wisemans shoot you could see many a Aussy bow. Mark Eastham "The Big Kahuna" on here is a very popular Victorian Bowyer in the Yarra Valley and there will be one or two of his bow coming up with the mexicans to Wisemans.

Trad Bound, when is the Wisemans Ferry shoot? I actually live on Sydney's North Shore, so Wisemans Ferry is not that far for me.

This bloke is the maker of the famous Gringa longbows. You could do a lot worse than to have a chat with him, Sevenmil.

Thanks guys, that is really helpful. Yes LB Rod 55 I definitely want an Aussie made bow, I know it will be built properly! Did I interpret Nephew's post correctly in that you are the maker of Gringa Bows? I had a quick look on facebook and liked what I saw, very nice - can I ask where you are based?

Goatchaser do you have a website to view more of your work?

Woodie I also liked the look of Norseman bows too, they look beautiful. I have actually been trying to contact Nick by phone and email, as I am in Sydney so it would be an easy drive north to meet him. I haven't had a response yet, but he is probably still on holidays as a lot of people are away till after Australia Day.

Do you guys know anything about Echidna bows, they look interesting as do Razor?

I think people are getting spoilt for choice these days! on Ozbow we have veterans like Rod [Gringa] Daryl [greybeard] myself and many others who all turn out a fine product. I think locality should have a big bearing on choice as if the intended owner is close to a reputable bowyer then for me I would be checking them out first as you can meet in person, discus wood choices ,requirements, ans satisfy yourself that the maker does know a little about the subject. As it appears you are in NSW then Nick Linten would be a great choice as he really does know his game.there are of course many more in your neck of the woods all making excellent bows.

Hi Sevenmil,

When discussing your needs with the various bowyers you will need to be specific about the bow profile i.e. a longbow not a deflex / reflex bow.

For a good bow twice paid for, is better than an ill bow once broken.

Thank you Woodie and all of you for your helpful advice. Sounds like I might be heading up to Wisemans Ferry for a look see. I must say I think I'll be going for a traditional straight laid glass laminated longbow, with Aussie timber.
