Im in the market for some hickory backing strips, say 80" in length, not quite sure of thickness?, (what's the norm about 5mm?) . . . They'll be backing some yew

Thickness would depend on what your making with it mate. By the sounds of it (80" long) you're looking to make something i would like to play around with and quite heavy. If you're doing a warbow i would say 6mm thick then use a 4mm crown and put your hickory on edge grain if you can.
