Went back to the yukon
So the wife and I decided to take a week for ourselves and go somewhere. She had been talking about a drive down the Oregon Coast but surprised me when I asked her where she wanted to go and she replied "I want to go back to the Yukon" She had come to visit the last few I days I was there last time and really wanted to go back and do some hiking and camping. It just so happened that our friend in Whitehorse was going caribou hunting at the time so we tagged along with him. We were just a tad early for the really vibrant colours and the weather was marginal but still had a fabulous time. Here's a couple of pic's...

Afternoon Tuff
So is the Railway operating all the way to Whithorse again? Or is it still being "planned"?
How did you get to Whitehorse - drive or other?

Awesome!
It's the great, big, broad land 'way up yonder,
It's the forests where silence has lease;
It's the beauty that thrills me with wonder,
It's the stillness that fills me with peace.

Grahame,
No railroad into Whitehorse yet. I think they're still making noises about it though. We flew from Victoria up to Whitehorse, otherwise it would have been about a 4 day drive.
cheers,

RC,
In the last photo is there an animal at about two o'clock or just looks like it? With your panos are they a few photos stiched or just cropped single photo. If stiched did you use manual exposure as they are very well done?

Hi Jeff,
No animal in the picture. It just struck me as an interesting contrast between the burnt trees and the fireweed. With the pano's I shot them in aperture priority mode but turned the camera sideways- portrait position and stitched anywhere from 2 to 6 pictures together. I kept an eye on my settings meter in case I had a strange light reading. Mostly I used a 28-100 f3.5 AF lens except for the caribou shot (which is cropped slightly) when I switched to a 100-400 f4.5 AF. It was a bit of a learning curve as I'm used to the Nikon but had a bag full of a friend's Cannon gear on this trip.
This one was (I think) 6 photo's stitched together.
I think a fish eye lens would be very beneficial in trying to capture the sheer size of this country!

This one is 3 overlapping, portrait oriented pictures stiched together in an attempt to replicate a large format style camera.

Re: Went back to the yukon
Thanks for that info mate, you did very well with the exposures. Your stiching is well done also, what software are you using for doing that?
That last photo is great, it sure is a vast country - truly beautiful!!!
Hey, nothin' wrong with Canon gear mate! My beautiful wife just bought me my dream camera, a Canon 5DII and also a 17-40F4L lens which I hope to get some great shots with. I am getting in practice with it as I am photographing my son's wedding next month. I sure am enjoying having full frame again after using a crop camera (40D) for the last 18 months. Post processing is the biggest learning curve with digital I have found.
Thanks once again for the great photos and giving us a glimpse of your part of the world.

That's a pretty nice rig the Mrs. got for you Jeff! Looking forward to seeing the pro grade pic's you'll be turning out.
You're right, absolutely nothing wrong with Cannon gear it's just a little different from what I usually use.
I use Photoshop CS3 for post processing and the photomerge feature works quite well.
Glad you guys like my photo's. Almost time for the annual moose trip so maybe I'll have a decent shot or two to post in early October.

Re: Went back to the yukon
Thanks RC I will sure be having fun taking some photos, not sure about the pro grade. I've just had my old faithful 28-70 f2.8L away having a service and I am hoping to get a longer zoom later in the year.
I know what you mean, it would be difficult changing settings etc with the different layout of your Nikon gear. It seems you managed to do so very well though.
I have had my learners for a few years now with Photoshop, making very steady progress.

Re: Went back to the yukon
I've been watching a series on the ABC called "Stephen Fry in America" for the last few weeks and one of the things I have noticed is that although Mr Fry may be a little bemused ( but in a good way ) by a lot of the Americans he meets and aspects of American mainstream culture in general, he has an absolute love for the landscapes he encounters throughout the North American continent. These pics display why that is! Incredible shots T.C.! Do you mind if I use one or two for desktop backgrounds?

Moreton: Go ahead! If you want a bigger file version drop me a PM and I'll email you one. It really is amazing country! Might even go back up this winter (maybe )
RC
Jeff- if you go with a bigger zoom get an image stabilized one. It's worth it.
