Two more Finished

#1 Post by dawallace45 » Fri Jul 02, 2010 3:06 pm

Well I usually forget to post pictures of the bows I make or even remember to take pictures of them but Rod always reckons that more pictures of bow makes the site interesting

So here goes , first bow is 43# @28" and 68" nock to nock , 18" riser is Kwila with some sort of timber from around the Daintree , never did know the name of it and Sallie Wattle , laminations are Coffee Bamboo flooring

Next bow is for my wife and is 64" Nock to Nock and 32# at 28" , 16" riser is Zebrano Bamboo flooring and the laminations are Coffee Bamboo , I used my Binghams style Reflex / Deflex form [ sorry Jeff ]

Two fantastic bows there.
I am a recurve shooter so I liked a lot your missus bow (deflex/reflex).
Good workmanship, nice well done nocks, nice finish.
Your missus must be very happy.
Good on ya!

Alex.

I agree 2 nice looking Bows,
Kwila is nice to work with, have used in a feature wall in a house I built years ago. Cheers Roadie.

They look very nicely made Dave. That Zebrano Bamboo flooring does look different. Thanks for posting up the photos mate.

Thanks Dave, I am sick of looking at Rod's bows  . The Zebra bamboo is interesting to work with, the bow I made with it is still one of my fave's. Well done, they both look nice. Steve

Hi David,

Nice looking bows.

I particularly enjoy seeing how people style and finish the riser and the tips of the bow.

Thanks guy's

Roadie , yeah I really like Kwila , I built my entire kitchen in it and also the full length Vanity , also the office desk and server tower and the Entertainment units in the Lounge and main bedroom

Rod gets to see many of my bows as I often take them down to weigh them on his scales as I don't have a bow scale yet , keep meaning to get one but always forget when placing a order

Steve
Yeah the Bamboo is interesting but hell it smells funny when your cutting it or sanding , tough as nails

Daryl

I've made about 20 laminated longbows so far and have been changing the riser styles some what all through but have found I much prefer the basic style Howard Hill , of course this may just be because I shot a Howard Hill bow for many years

The Tips always cause me problems getting them just right and even with spending 4 hours on each of the tips on the last bow I still don't think them completely right but they are as good as can be and if I go any further I'll only make them worse , they seem to be a thing that actually gets harder with each bow as you want to make the next one better than the last , also my eye sight isn't as good as it once was and now I've taken to wearing the cheap magnification glasses to try and see better up close , even so I've found that the best way for me to see imperfections in the bow like sanding marks and such is to give a light coat of finish , let it dry and then look at it in the sun

Still on the tips , I much prefer the pointy style tips I do to the blunt styles , it's just personal preference but I think they do look better on a longbow

Gentlemen , thank you again for the kind words

Tony , Rod is still a few bows up on me and I love the last one he built , it still amazes me that he's gotten so good in such a short time as he doesn't come from a woodworking background , myself coming from a life time as a hobby woodworker should have a theoretical advantage over him but I don't , I go down and visit him probably at least once a month and we some time swap ideas and that is handy for me , we both do things a little differently from each other and while we have similar gear we use them differently , Rod is probably more open to trying new things than me

Looking gorgeous. I especially like the second one. Great to see work like this being done here. Keep it up all
