Alight in flight. Fire arrows ablaze!!

#1 Post by stringnstik » Mon May 03, 2010 8:15 pm

Not really traditional tackle I must admit as its construction was hardly authentic but here it is anyway :)

Up at my BILs over the weekend and we always get to play with something that smokes, this time around it was my shout. id read somewhere that linen rag dipped in linseed oil was the way to keep the flame alight. So it was time to prove the point.
We had a piece of 3-4mm thick 120mm long steel bar. We cut it most of the way into four. Then heated the end (sorry no forge just good old modern acetylene) and bent it into half thus giving us 2 pair of parallel legs. Grabbed an old steel blunt arrow point and bronzed it between the legs. then plied the legs out a bit to form that classic fire cage arrow point shape.

The pre prepared rags were dry and a little stiff but still perfect for winding in and out of the cage. But would it really stay alight in flight? Only one way to find out.

Loose!!

They flame up slowly and with no volatile aggressive behavior. They burn slow too, we got near on 4 shots out of the one rag. A perfect black night with no moon to spoil the fireworks and plenty of space to shoot.

The fire arrow has a wonderful hypnotic flickering flight. And yes she did not go out!! which was a good thing as it would have been darn hard to find the arrow otherwise.
Id used an extra long arrow to ensure the flame was clear of the bow and my hand and although it was a tad heavy it flew quite well and predictable.

I can only imagine a dozen or more of these things in simultaneous flight... awesome!!!

yes Steve well spotted. For some reason that particular one was longer so it was the chosen. The others have had a somewhat better life :)

oooohhhhh fire arrows....! Andy wouldn't let Nev and I shoot his longship with fire arrows at night last year, dunno why? Probably a good thing as Nev and fire don't mix....

Challenge accepted! We're having another archery weekend in July so the paddocks we shoot in should be nice and damp. I've just emailed a mate with a forge about making the fire cages, so we'll see if we can't just get a photo and some video of a dozen fire arrows in flight for you :D

we tapped some glow sticks (thin one's like drinking straws) to our arrows one night, looked great in flight (not as good as the fire arrows but a bit safer)

hey all us guys should band together and have a stump shooting tour of NSW & VIC with those in august. that way they'll be no more bushfires next summer.

oh, silly me :| that's right that's not the answer to the bushfire problems down there.

nice effort with those arrows by the way.

I dont know about a hundred archers on a line stringnstik.
I'd like to see one hundred archers and there War bows in a full circle, radius 100mtrs. (In Canberra)
Sync the lighting to full blaze.
Point and aim to the centre.

The only thing missing in the centre is a target.

Do you think a hundred archers would be enough to circle Parliament house.

Inspired by stringnstik, a friend and I made up some fire arrows of our own.

Unfortunately the weather ruined the chance to test our fire arrows at night as planned, the best we could do was a quick test during a brief sunny period on an otherwise miserable rainy day.

However it does bode well for the next evening we get up at at the farm :-)

I should point out that we were only drawing to 24 inches using 25-30lb bows, and aiming above 45 degrees so we didn't have to go too far to fetch them otherwise they'd burn through the wooden shaft. But you'll notice that they didn't really go very far. I think the combination of low launch velocity, overall weight, air resistance of the fabric, and air resistance to the flames all combined to give crappy range. That loud WHOOSH! sounds awesome but it's all energy being wasted I suppose.

Next time we do it, I'll be using thicker fabric which will hold more cloth, the oil will be allowed to dry so it will hopefully burn better, and we'll crank them to full draw.

Man real shame about the weather.
you mentioned you would try dry cloth next time? I think this is very important. It must be allowed to dry.. I shot mine twice that distance and not once did the flame extinguish.
The sound is awesome isnt it :)

Yeah bummer about the weather, we set up some targets in the drizzle and were going to jus tpack up and go home but thought "nah bugger it, we're here already, let's have a go." So the fuel got drizzled on while wrapping and sizzled upon lighting due to the water and oil :D

Next time if we get good weather, we'll do it properly and there'll be more tan 3 of us there too!
