Lam sander project :D

#1 Post by BenBow » Sun Apr 25, 2010 11:49 am

Here are some pictures of the lam sander I built by modifying a set of plans I got from Plans Now.
this has a 6" wide table and drum, hand crank feed table, and will be powered by my table saw. Still have the table height adjustment parts to make and install. Looking good so far.

I got it running and it works good. The test piece measures the same on the edges so it should work out ok. Need to build the dust collector though as it does make sawdust.

The dust collector isn't much but it works. I had a piece of white oak that I was running through on my wedge sled that came out at .3435 on one side and .344 on the other. Here's a video

It certainly looks like you put some time into making that up mate. The most important thing is that it is accurate - congrats.

Great looking lam grinder Ben. You certainly have a knack for woodwork. I'm like a few blokes on here that like steel. I am working on a lam grinder that has very little wood in it (only the master taper) and if I could make a bow with the metal working tools I have I would. There is one thing good about wood tho...... Steel prices are just crazy lately. Good on you for having the courage to and achieving making precision equipment as you have from wood.... well done.

Cheers, Rod

I like your work Ben bow, I admired it when you posted it on the Pirate site. I thought I would show a photo of my new sander

Very impressive workmanship on a very cool piece of machinery. I take my hat off to you.

I will let you know when i get the 15 amp wiring done. :D
Graeme modified it to run a narrow belt for economy and was doing up to 200 lams a day so it should be good. It apparently will make a lam in fewer passes and not wear the abrasive as quick so should pay for it self pretty quick as I do lams for another prolific bowyer aswell :D .

Hey Steve that has got a big horsepower/high torque look about it. Put wheels on it and the Stig will do a test drive. Looks like a Ford GTHO compared to a Mini Minor. Do not hang on too hard.....probably vibrate every bone in your body. Better make sure the concrete slab in your shed is up to it.
That is a really serious sawdust generator. You will be bagging and selling exotic timber dust for people smoking fish next.

That looks good Rod and all you really need :) .
Kev, I hope it doesnt shake and jump around  I was hoping for smooth and quiet. I have some pecan shavings that will produce a nice smoked flavour  . Now I am hungry :D
