Making my first bow

#1 Post by Bandsaw » Sun Apr 25, 2010 11:22 am

I am wanting to make myself a trad longbow. I am not sure on what wood would be best to make it out of. I am hoping to get it round the 50-55# mark at 28'' draw. So any advice would be much appreciated conserning what woods I would be better off using.

Firstly, welcome to the site mate.

Try this thread in our 'Ozbow Featured Threads' forum' - http://www.ozbow.net/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=3329

Also try a few searches using the term bowmaking, aussie timbers, self bows etc and I'm sure you will find a lot of interesting reading.

Cheers jeff, the cousin took me down to bunnings yesterday and showed some of the woods i could use, but they didnt have much variety only bamboo, and tassie oak. Hopefully one day i'll be good enough to have a go at making a lam bow. Your build along was a great read and got interested in trying it one day.

Glad to have you here and good on Ron for pointing you in our direction. :D I'm sure the fellas on here will be supportive of your bowmaking and willing to help where they can. There are some other good buildalongs on here which I'm sure you will find interesting also.

Red Ash for an Aussie wood but Osage Orage is my favourite.

My cousin loves osage orange but dont like how hard it is to work with. But will keep it in mind when I go wood hunting. The cousin is hoping to get some robinia as well, dunno where from though.
