How do you straighten hickory?
Can somebody tell me how to straighten hickory shafts? I've never done any heat-straightening before. My Ace roller straightener seems to be better suited to cedars and Oregon. Thanks.

I have never used Hickory Ben but do use hardwood shafts and I have always just used the placing of the shafts between my thumb and first finger and over the heal of my palm method. The hardwood shafts need a fair bit of persuasion at times.

Ben some of the hardwood shafts I got some time ago needed to be straightened and I rubbed a screwdriver shaft along the outside of the bend and this seemed to work real well and they only needed to be done ounce with this method.
Of course you could just get some carbons..........

Hi Ben, If they need more than what Jeff and Kimall have suggested you could wet the shaft with Vege oil and gently heat with a heat gun. Selfbow makers use this method or steam when straightening limbs on Hickory staves. Steve

Re: How do you straighten hickory?
I think I was doing it wrong; I was placing the shaft flat on the table and rolling along the top of the curve. Now I've started holding one end, with the other end on the table, and rolling along the top of the curve. This seems to be working.
