Video - Making a Braided / Flemish String

#1 Post by Mububban » Tue Feb 09, 2010 10:54 pm

A local bow maker was kind enough to show me how to make bows and braided/Flemish strings a while ago, and was happy for me to upload the string section to Youtube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EXaUxSqu63o

And here's another video on serving the string:

I'm sure many people on here know how to do this, but I thought it'd be helpful for people like myself who are starting out and need all the help we can get :) I'm a visual learner, I struggle following articles and prefer to watch someone doing something to learn.

Saw the video very clear, been puting of making a flemish string for years .looks to complicated .but seen in the video is easy .
I pulled apart an old string I hade straighten it out and put it together better than before .
I realise I dont need to understand what I am doing just do it like in the video .
hold the string just like the guy did and it came out perfect .
now I understand how it works after I did it I understand it not before .

it makes sens to me what I am sayng .now I know how to make a flemish string without buyng a DVD and maybe then not understanding it .
its all nice when every body ells can make a flemish string but. what about me.

Not only can you make a flemish string now you'll notice that as you sit around in the bush you'll start using natural materials to make cord. 'Tis a great way to while away the time.

or at work chef :0
the plastic strap on my expensive magnifier head band broke the other day. To the surprise of my work mates I whipped out a length of leather I just happened to have in my bag. cut a belt strap. drilled four holes to mount it to the magnifier part. Wet it, then wore it about for 30min while it dried to a perfect fit.
Which reminds me I must take it home and carve sommit nice into it ;)

Well I'm glad it was able to help :) The guy in the video is really good at showing things in an easy to follow way. Having a rewind button helps too :P

There's no way I would have been able to follow written instructions for doing this. I'm an audiovisual learner, I like to watch an example, then do it myself to learn.

I'm all thumbs, but when I learned to make my own strings last year, the sense of satisfaction and pride in a job well-done really enriched my bowhunting experience (not to mention the savings in the long run).
It's the great, big, broad land 'way up yonder,
It's the forests where silence has lease;
It's the beauty that thrills me with wonder,
It's the stillness that fills me with peace.
