One way to fix a crack

#1 Post by looseplucker » Fri Jan 22, 2010 12:45 pm

One of my young bloke's bows developed a transverse crack across the back. It was bamboo backed with calico. Anyhow he likes the bow and he can't draw the new one that I made for him and he asked if I could fix it (I had previously patched it). I do enjoy doing repairs as it is a good way to experiment.

Anyhow yesterday morning I put the bow in the vice and attached a 1/2 kilo weight to the tip - this bent it enough to widen the crack enough. Then I mixed up some epoxy and using a tip from TBB heated it up in a spoon - this made it quite runny and then I poured it onto the crack - it was going in reasonably well - but I added a dimension - and dry fired my air rifle at the glue a few times - which gives a new dimension to shooting a bow....anyhow it worked a treat and then last night I glued on a spotted gum backing with the bow in reflex.

Result - favourite bow back in business -

Necessity is the mother of invention.

Me? I will use any excuse to use a weapon for another practical purpose. I've actually done it before when I had some problems with laminations running up fade outs. It makes it all more fun.

Mrs Looseplucker thinks I'm mad.

We'll see how the bow goes out at Tom's place this weekend.
