My 1st bow for 2010
this is number three for ferdy,he asked me to make him another one the other day.
i was making it for myself using the new guinea tulipwood for the first time, but it came in 20lb overweightits alot different to lam.bamboo flooring.
i put two grooves ion the top limb,so he could use his home made stringer,
this is my first atempt at footing the riser this way,i used bubinga and purple heart in this one
i used bamboo for the accent lines
i was impatient so i drove out to ferdys place so i could see how fast it was compared to bamboo,460k round trip
ferdy getting different weight arrows ready
Ferdy at full draw makes it look easy, lucky bugger has his own personal range .................Rod

Hey Rod good to see you strait into it for the new year.
The footings in the riser look terrific mate choice of woods come together well.
Ferdies course is always something Ive wanted in me back yard but will have to wait until I win the lotto to get one though.
Your bows are going ahead in leaps and bounds Rod it is good to see you developing your talents it is a great hobby and one you enjoy buy the looks of it.
Cheers Wayno

Well-done, Rod!
It's the great, big, broad land 'way up yonder,
It's the forests where silence has lease;
It's the beauty that thrills me with wonder,
It's the stillness that fills me with peace.

Re: My 1st bow for 2010
Nice work.
If you stopped driving to Ferdy"s place at 55 cents per kilometre you could soon buy your own chrony and a few targets!!!!! With that sort of gear someone will help you set up a range somewhere closer to home!
Or do you just like the way Ferdy makes his damper?
Kevin

Re: My 1st bow for 2010
What Rod is actually saying here Kevin is that although he is big and ugly he is a wus and couldn't draw the bow back to test it.the chrony we used is mine and i have some 3ds so thats a start
Good on ya Rod, different core materials can sure effect the poundage outcome alright. I like the brown glass too.

Re: My 1st bow for 2010
Yeah i have been in contact with him discussing which woods to make it from, i think we are going with blackwood outer with bamboo cores and bubinga handle all under clear glass.

Rod, just give a holler when you plan on coming and I'll make sure I'm not home.next one i do i'll bring down for you to pull back for full draw photo's
Toby,
If you are going to get a kit from Clarky make sure you get him to cut your riser the same width as your lams and glass. For some (stupid IMO) reason the risers I've seen him supply for longbows have only been 1 1/8" wide which means you have little to no leeway in sideways movement. With your glue up - especially your first one - you will have enough to keep an eye on without that unnecessary problem.
Another problem the narrow riser can cause is the belly glass and lam to split when clamping for glue up as they are wider than the riser.
All the best with it mate.
Jeff
Re: My 1st bow for 2010
Ok thanks, i will make sure he gets them the same width. Is 1.5" wide enough?

Re: My 1st bow for 2010
Yeah mate 1.5" is fine for a longbow.
