first hickory backed bow
i have just started a new bow we have a hickory back,(extreemly dark) spotted gum core and boo belly, this one is for a friend who i made a bow for a few months back it, it shot strong for that time but one cold morning we where shooting and the blackbutt back gave out (thats what i get for experimenting) but the specs are its an ELB 72" long and should draw 50lbs @ 29", ill put up pics once im up to something more exciting than glueing.
thanks,

well as i got to ripping up the board i noticed that the grain isnt the best in this hickory, since it was a rough sawn slab at the shop i couldnt tell you see but i think it will work out

Thanks Dave
Thought you must have got it from Monaro Timbers but just wondered if there was another supplier. Where have they moved to? Bow looks good. Well done.
Cheers

Re: first hickory backed bow
I've still got a couple of bows left in the plank I got from them but will need more. Thought it was indestructable stuff but had a flatbow break the other day after I stuffed up the handle, reinforced it then had a limb break longitudionally. My other two hickory selfbows are holding together well.

Re: first hickory backed bow
Good looking bow Ichi, how much string follow did the bow take. I like the all wood composites myself....Glenn....
Re: first hickory backed bow
it follows the string by 1" (just un braced) which surprised the heck out of me considering it was glued flat but shoots like its been drinking its proten shakes, but this level of string follow tells me that i could squeeze a few more FPS out of it but the guy i made it for is just learning to shoot so the likely hood of him overdrawing is pritty high, so ill leave it there for durabilitys sake.

Re: first hickory backed bow
That's a very good result Dave. I haven't tried mixing timber species of late except for a bamboo backing...Glenn...

Re: first hickory backed bow
Nice looking bow Dave - hope to see it in the flesh - before I go to the States - but if not, don't get rid of it until I get back.
I like the combination for sure - and would be interested in the dimensions of each as I think you are really onto something in combining the best of each of the materials.
Will send an email.

Are you well informed or is your news limited?
