bow finish

#1 Post by ichiban » Tue Aug 11, 2009 2:51 pm

as i said b4 i would do some experiments and let you guys know so heres the first.

1pt paste wax
3pt linseed oil
2pt spirit

i added thease all togeather in a clean dog food can and kept it at a rolling boil for 5min, during which time the metho rpeatedly caught fire (i added the spirit to drop the boiling temp), so if it catches fire (it will) remove it from the flame and quickly smother the fire (in the can). stir it regularly and cairfully (or you may catch fire) and vola.

i wound up with an extreemly soft wax. and it penitrates like a gem.
ill keep you guys informed with experiment 2!!

thanks,
D

sorry about the quick info b4, yep it dose dry out from what i can see so far (i only tryed it yesterday) and from what i have seen one coat provides good moisture protection but i would use 3-4 to be sure, to apply it i grabed a blob (for lack of a better word) on a clean rag and rubed the bow vigorisly to aid penitration after 10 min using a second rag and wiped off excess an it provided a semi gloss non tacky finish when dry. and please if your gonna make this DO IT OUT SIDE!!!! with a bucket of water handy should things go bad, this combination is VERY flammable.
i will post pics of a bow im working on where i will use this finish. thanks guys :D

DO NOT pour water on a flammable Liquid fire , it will only make it bigger and flare up .

ooo good thing you pointed that out i totaly spaced on that  , yea like i said in the fist post if the can catches remove it from the flame, and somther it with something, then it can be returned to the flame. for this only the smallest fire is needed dont go over board, otherwise removing and replacing the can will be difficult.

thanks coach,
