Latest Project - WITH PICTURES!!!!

#1 Post by pdccr » Sun Jul 05, 2009 6:02 pm

Just finished my new bow and im getting to the stage of putting a finish on it. This one i was alot more patient and its my first bow that shoots. I have only made one other and it was from tassie oak so im doing pretty well. She comes up at #38 at 27", made from spotted gum decking and no backing :D really tentative about drawing any further but have put around 50 arrows through her and she is coming up well. About 1" of set and thats it. The only change i might make is the handle, i left it as wide as the limbs but im thinking of taking it in a bit as its a bugger to aim at long distances. It has some good cast for a 71" bow  . Cant post any pics as dont have a camera on me but will get around to doing it later on.

Now the finish, i only have danish oil so i was thinking about using it but wasnt sure if it was ok for a selfbow. Any feedback will be most welcome!

PS; Feels great to hit something you aimed at with a bow you made along with self arrows! 8)

mate thats awsome, nothing better than shooting an arrow you made from a bow you made into a target you made huh, i use danish oil (from feast watson) on my bows and its awsome stuff its really tops, i have no complaints about it at all, the way i finish a bow is to burnish the whole thing with a SMOOTH rock or glass bottle then sign it with mapping ink or indian drawing ink (it dosent come off when dry) then give it 5-7 coats and either burnish it with a stone or 000 steel wool betwen coats, trust me you can still feel the wood and it shines like a gem

well to apply the ink a nib is best used rather than a brush so you can control the amount a little beter, you can get nibs of varioius sizes at calligraphy stores and better art stores, ink is the same there may also be a chance that news agents carry both items, and that infomation will cost you a few pictures

Looks really good, congratulations, feels great to shoot a selfbow, doesn't it.

Any chance of a pic at full draw?

Cheers,
Steve.

Thanks guys, had a really good round with it yesterday at 15m, all within a 20cm area. Other than that a couple stray to the left becuase of the handle and me not cutting an arrow rest into the bow, just waiting for some leather and my dacron so i can make a proper string

Hi Toby,

Well done, :D , I am sure there will be a lot more bows to follow.
