The Joys of a Meare Heath Style bow

#1 Post by Brumbies Country » Mon Jun 01, 2009 9:24 am

In response to Steve's request here is some not so expert photography with regard to the hickory Meare heath style bow I finished a bit over a week ago. It's 67" long and acording to rather primitive fish weighing scales 43lbs at 28". The photos don't show it but it has a nice grain and I decided with this one not to darken it. I'd like to make one with the cambium that Steve showed on the Pecan bow.

For a bow that you shoot round the handle it shoots remarkable straight if my form is OK. I really enjoy shooting it. In line with what Paul Comstock says about the MH being an example of an "overbuilt bow" it's relatively quick and there is no hand shock and no stacking that I can detect. I'm getting a bit of a strong interest in this and hoping to pick up selfbow building tips at the Gathering. Now want to make a back-up MH, an American Indian bow and later, a Holmegaard.

Decided not to put the historically correct leather on this one Grahame, but I thought I might put leather on the elm one I made and keep it as a museum piece.

Hi Simon, the Pecan came from Byron Bay scored a few staves from a property who were knocking a few trees over for an extension, I already had a van full of Madake bamboo so good only grab a little. Steve
