how to cut tyre rubber

i have a couple of old tyre tubes for glueing up my bow. how do i cut the tubes. do i cut around the tyre in a circle to get one long strip or across to get lots of rings. any help will be great.

G'day

Usually I use a pair of sharp siccors to cut long ways around the tube, so i get long strips.
I also have used those really BIG rubber bands from the Post Office.

i just cut 20mm.or so wide round the tube and get long strips with scissors.....Rod

Otis im not very neat when i cut the rubber so it ends up 20-30mm.wide :wink:

thanks steve, i'm using pretty large tubes. how often are the spacings between your pins? i was going to do 2" gaps.

From memory 2"-50mm and similar from the surface of the form. You can use the larger rings and just loop over 2-3 times or until the tension is correct(as tight as you can go) or just cut the strips as Rod, Moss and Graeme do. Steve

You can make up a cutter like you would for strip cutting leather , you use a couple of blocks of wood and a blade from a Stanley knife
