Rattan for a kids bow

#1 Post by looseplucker » Thu Apr 23, 2009 1:34 pm

William and I watched the Dean Torges DVD the other day and both me and the lad were intrigued by the rattan kids bow. I would like to make one more out of curiosity (as himself wants a shop bought recurve, the little scamp) - anyone know where to get hold of rattan? Google has not really helped.

Cheers

John

Hi John, I too could not find anything raw product wise. Try emailing the Bamboo farm of Australia in QLD as they may have some growing or be able to put you on to a supplier. Steve

There are rattan furniture builders in Australia, have you tried the phone book for them, or ask at a furniture shop that sells them and sak if they are Australian made and they might put you onto them...Glenn...

Speak to the members of your local SCA. They shoot at one of the clubs down there.

They use Rattan to beat each other to death with.

i dont think the SCA here would be any help as they either use shinai ( japanese bamboo practise sword) or big slabs of foam perhaps you could use some boo flooring??

Very hard to come by, unless your willing to buy the whole cubic meter.

Try the SCA anyway, they will know where to get rattan. And as they cover all their weapons (foam or rattan) in the same silver duct tape to avoid splintering etc, they kind of all look the same from a distance.

I know of a Perth furniture store who supplies to the local SCA, so chances are your local one will know too.

if you look for bamboo flooring yeah its expencive but if you think out side the box there are other options i.e bamboo screening the boards are 2 1/4" wide 19mm deep and 75" long and cost $8 per board there solid and vertical grained obviously
