next bow.

#1 Post by ichiban » Mon Mar 23, 2009 11:27 am

i have been meaning to get to this stave for ages, its hopefully going to be 40lbs@29" and 70" long.
the stave is by request made to look a little like yew so due to my friends cash restraints the stave is Spotted gum backed with Blackbutt (i would have perferd hickory obviously) and i have left the blackbutt 7mm thick for the full length and will be of a "compass" tiller.

i will post some pics if it turns out to be worth it.

cheers,
Dave

for sure, im not sure how Blackbutt will go as a bow wood but its only 50kg less than spotted gum per cubic meter and spotty gum is a good belly timber so fingers crossed.

thanks for the kind words, she shoots well theres a bit of hand shock from the working handle but thats to be expected i guess. heres a pic of it at full draw (well almost im a bit tired after shooting my 60lb bow most of the day).
im not very happy with the tiller but its not all togeather bad i think. tell me what you think.

cheers,
Dave

It doesnt look any bad from a newbies view, try running a square block over the belly and see if the gap changes.

Hi Dave,

Keep up the good work. :D :D :D .

With regards to the hand shock, did you try different hand placements on the bow?

As a suggestion it may help to put some taper on the back lamination to help maintain the ratio of the two woods back to belly.

hey daryl i tryed various placements and the hand shock isnt significant to cause any problems but you can feel it if you know what i mean... i guess what i mean is that because its working right through the handle with slightly stiffer tips the movment of the handle during the release could be confused with hand shock but i did think think about tapering the belly so the backing finished up as being 5 mm thick for the full length and only the belly is tapered, so as you move up the limb the slightly lighter blackbutt makes up more of the limb as bending preassure decreases....well that was the plan anyway hehe.

cheers,
Dave

thats what this 1 is the SG is flooring which was split up the middle and ground down to be a small solid peice of SG and the BB is decking which i cut in half then cut those halves up the middle (hard work on the poor table saw) i payed $10 for thease peaces of timber and have enough for 2 bows and 2 spair backings. cant complain

Wow, i had a hard time trying to get those folds out of the decking boards yesterday. Ended up with me using a spanner and the blunt end of my hatchet to split the wood. Worked pretty well. Might duck into porters to see if they have and flooring.

No i drilled a hole every 5cm on my outline and then hit the spanner down in between them. Didnt follow the grain at all. Will try to get the best i can with spotty gum.

there was a rule out there somewhere.. but yeah one or two (3 or more if im trying to prove something in a low weight bow) run offs per limb is my limit. other than nessicary tapering of cause
