Glue for Wood backing
Just wondered what glue is best for attaching hickory backing on an otherwise wood self bow. Looseplucker told me in a private email ten or so days ago and darned if I can find the email.

If you bake the bow at 60deg you can prob tiller the next day but without heat I leave the bow a week before bending too much.I use techniglue too.

Hi Simon, As Kimall said, if you cure with heat (techniglue) you can get started in a few hours but the longer you leave it the better. Patience is a virtue in this game.
For glues such as titebond and urac you need to read the instructions to ascertain when maximum bond strength is achieved at different temps?

Re: Glue for Wood backing
I've found Titebond 3 to be the best in my experience.
It doesn't smell, it's non toxic so you can safely have it on your skin, washes off with water when wet, set and ready fortiller in under 48 hours......
the list goes on. I can't recommend it enough.
I've never tried techniglue though.

Re: Glue for Wood backing
Thank you for the feedback. Really appreciate it. Just wondered where you get both these glues from. Wasn't able to get them from big oulets of Mitre 10 or Bunnings in Canberra. Are they more likely to be found from marine suppliers?

To get off the shelf, I've only ever found Titebond III at Carbatec. It was about 20 bucks for nearly a litre.

Re: Glue for Wood backing
Hi Simon, generally specialist wood working suppliers or as Dave said Carbatec who have an online service. I have seen Titebond and urac at Bunnings however.
Just another note, Techniglue is quite user friendly, doesnt affect me when it gets on my skin and is cleaned up with white vinegar. Dust masks must be worn whe sanding. Steve

Thanks Steve and Dave
Really good that you can chase up this sort of thing on this forum. It's for the second ash bow I've built out of the rather dry plank that I made the unsuccessful first. This time I played heed to the good advice re grain considerations from Daryl and Dennis. This ones looking better with progressive tillering. I have the hickory and can back it. Convinced this morning that backing would ensure survival. Now wondering if it might be a stand alone proposition. Decisions, decisions but if I get the appropriate glue then can do it as I need to.
Cheers

That's worth knowing about the bottled hide glue. I'll have a look this afternoon.

Re: Glue for Wood backing
I bought the Titebond 111. When I want to put backibng on a bow I'm now ready to move. No hide glue which mightn't be altogether a bad thing. Not the most practical of glues although good in a trad sense.

Re: Glue for Wood backing
Techniglue is very very good, there is no way I would use titebond 3 if I could buy techniglue. The titebond will work as a lot of people use it successfully, resorcinol (spelling) is the best wood to wood glue as it is not effected by heat and is waterproof but can be very hard to find...Glenn...
