What a beast.
I found a pic of this bow from the Mary Rose.
What a beast of a thing. It surely bust be one of the heavier bows found on the ship.

Re: What a beast.
I was talking to Bede Dwyer [who is really knowledgeable about bow related antiquities] at the Hall of Fame dinner. He was telling us that one or some of them were rated at over 160 poiunds draw.
Most of us are not even a third of the way there.
Len's warbow group start at 80 pounds I believe so at least most of those hardy gents are half way there.........very sobering. Must really hurt if you have a couple of weeks off shooting those babies.

Re: What a beast.
yeah learning to shoot those badboys would leave you with some serious DOMS but since they train all there lives... and the bones from the mary rose show some serious disfiguration.

Re: What a beast.
I didn't get many good photos of the bows themselves when I visited the Mary Rose Museum in 2007, the lighting is very dim but I did snap these. The jaws of the self nock are quite shallow. Could be erosion or short = quicker to mass produce.
They did have a steel faux-bow rigged to about 120lb draw weight, unfortunately (but wisely) it's anchored to the wall so you can't really use your whole body to climb into it. You can only attempt to o a modern archery pullback, which is hopelessly weak in comparison!
The remainders of the ship's hull was pretty cool though.

Re: What a beast.
Yeah, the Nanny state made them take the string off that one some time between my visits in October 2003 and May 06. I managed to get that one to full draw on my first visit, my poor wife tells me I was unsufferably smug for days. I'll just ignore how much my elbow hurt and for how long after...Mububban wrote:They did have a steel faux-bow rigged to about 120lb draw weight, unfortunately (but wisely) it's anchored to the wall so you can't really use your whole body to climb into it.

Kevin and Rob
When the Mary Rose Exhibition a few years ago came to Brisbane the had a similar setup. A Modern glass laminated bow bolted to the wall that people could play with.
