live tiller with your help

#1 Post by outbackarcher » Sat Mar 07, 2009 7:01 pm

hello everybody,
im going to post pictures of me tillering my spotty gum longbow, and some of you wil decide to help tiller it (hopefully). i will post up the photo of it on tillering tree, and you guys will tell me 1 whats wrong with the tiller, and 2 how to fix it.

i better give you guys some info on the bow. it is a spotty gum board 66.75" long, 40mm wide and 19mm thick. 10" handle area with one riser that is dryingas i type. i just stole some nice hardwood from the scrapbox in the man arts room and cut it up and sandwhiched a peice of spotted gum in the middle. got enough spare for 2 sets of overlays. width taper from handle to 20mm wide tips and unknown thickness. it is backed with 2 layers of silk first black then orange.

i will be shooting this bow (if it survives) at north albert due to my other longbow has a life threating injury and can be no longer used without exploding

i will post my first pics around 5:30 to 6:00 pm EST tomorrow.

hope to see many posting,
Lewis

ok imho its bending to much on the upper limb at mid limb, remove more timber from near the handle, and the lower limb looks ok, could bend near the handle a bit more though but its fine.

love the facial expression, we have all been there hehe.

Lewis you've got some nasty hinges appearing mid limb there.. The outer 1/3 of the limbs are almost static so work on getting them bending first mate  Then as Ichi said, take a few more shavings off near the handle to get it bending almost into the fades. See how you go mate.. You really need to make yourself a tiller stick so you can have a good look at what's going on. Have fun!

Before you go any further mate stop work on the bow and make a tiller tree. You need to be able to study it at draw for a bit and to slide a tiller stick along the stave to get an idea on how is going.IMHO it needs to bend more at the fade outs and at the tips and stay away from the middle of the limb top limb.I know it is your first and it is going great but you should prob not draw it that far until both limbs are bending the same or the stronger limb will bend the softer limb out of shape all the time.I would like to see a pic of it at brace height but not drawn if pos.Of course all this would be so much easier with a tiller tree. If you need help to make one or even if you want to borrow mine drop me a PM or give me a ring.
Cheers KIM
