So I've been a little busy...

Over the past week or so I've been a tad busy with the renovations on the house that I'm doing but I did find the time to finally sit down and put some work into this little project that I've always wanted to try  ....

Good job Al ,that looks pretty great did you make the jig yourself and use a router.
Coach why not, thats what traditional is all about for me is making your own gear, just like you and your strings! and tattoos its all an art form.
its all good fun.
Have a look at some of Steve Wallaces work it is the best l,ve seen and he does it all by hand a real craftsman.

Yeah I know ,, but I just cant head my head round doing all that work to have it broken while out hunting .
to me it looks pretty , but arrows get broken so often , I just cant see the point . But thats just me , dont take offence , keep on building them

So far I routed out a dozen ash shafts to anable me to foot them with the hard wood footings I have made up. I'm yet to put the cuts into the foots but will do soon enough. Here are some more pics...

Hi mate,

The footing timber is Kewlia .... but I'm not that sure of the spelling though? I'd like to use move of a darker material in the future so I'm keeping my eye out.

You're a real craftsman, Al!

It's the forests where silence has lease;
It's the beauty that thrills me with wonder,
It's the stillness that fills me with peace.

Morning Al.

Is that a laminate trimmer or a small router you are using? I have always just used a router table but that photos of yours may have just convinced me to build a specialist tool/setup for the job - using a cheap router/laminate trimmer.

Fantastic! Where did you get the arrow holding jig? Is it hard to realign the shaft 90 degrees to get an accurate footing?

G'day Grahame,

mate all I did was buy a small trimmer router from Bunnings for about $90.00. The jig comes with a bit and Kingsley Honan and I built up the platform to run the jig along. It takes a bit of tweaking to get the depth and centering but a few test runs sorts that out easy enough.

Here is the link to the jig Steven:

http://www.3riversarchery.com/Arrow+Bui ... oduct.html

It comes with instructions but I feel you kinda need to fill in the gaps here and there with a little CDF.

I've also found that you need to pay some detail to the shafts and how close to being fully round. If there a tad ovel it can lead to more routed out then whats needed. Again test runs sort this out.

I'll do a full "Foot-a-long" once I've finished up the whole process.

Thanks for the welcoming words........I've been reading the forum for a while now but have never had anything interesting to add ......

I've split a rod into five using slitting saw and a dividing head on my milling machine but it wasn't perfect (hence lack of photo) - this bit I'm still working on

Your Mad :!: :!: :!:

Just wait 'till Coach gets a hold of you

Tell me more about the milling machine concept. I am begining to think that this may be one serious tool for precision wood working. Grizzly in the USA make a milling machine specifically for timber workers. It has a longer range of travel to account for the generally larger projects. What else do you use your machine for?

Steven

Fitter & Turner (toolmaker) by trade - at work Ive got a Bridgeport milling machine built for metal work but works well with wood. (in my spare time)
A dividing head like a lathe chuck that can be rotated accurately into any number of divisions, x5 , x6 or what ever number you need. I machined up a eight foot arrow but each foot/leg was to thin.
Five footed is a good/odd number which is hard to do bu still has detail
I don't have a snappy catch phrase ......

A local Arrow maker - Steve Wallace - makes lovely footed shafts with the foot made from 4 different timbers! Works of art.

Sue - how about posting some pictures of Steves's masterpieces.
