Mini bow build off?

#1 Post by cmoore » Tue Oct 13, 2015 10:59 pm

Hi gang

Just got this idea off a U.S trad bow site, would there be any takers on here?.
Not thinking of this as a competition but more of a challenge really, here are the rules that they laid down for theirs

Must be composed of one solid piece of wood.

Longbow, recurve, flatbow, etc.

Must be under 12" OAL.Tip and riser overlays allowed.

Must be functional, i.e. The best tiller you can do, can't just look good and break when you pull it back.

Ofcourse as this wouldn't be a competition these could more like rough guidelines, perhaps the challenge should also include any types of trad gear in general

I have a little red oak bow that I made to show the young boys next door, it is about 4" long and draws to about 1.5".

I did make a laminated longbow about 18" long that I shot a cane toad with does that count?

I like making test bows.

Holy smokes that's a small bow woodie! ....what did you use for string material? Looks like dental floss.....the little quiver and arrows have got me inspired to....think ill make my bow the same size and see if I can make some equipment to match :Axe

Can you put up some more pic's of that 18" laminate bow? How many lams does it have? And I'm curious to know how it performs

I used cotton for the string on the little bow. The arrows are made for tooth picks fletched with galah feathers, thanks to my pet.
The 18" bow had one lam that was tapered. The fibre glass was G10 which used for insulation in the electrical trade, I work with electric motors so I got some scrap. So it was not as good as if it had botuff.
I has been broken by a dimwit pulling it back to far.
Here is a photo of the riser to give you an idea.

Little SG self bow, 'bout 13" long. Diamondback serving for the string. It developed a hinge in the RHS at mid-limb so I don't want to break it doing a full draw pic. It has been sitting on the dash of my troopy with my little pig mascot for years now.

Will have a go at another one to shoot bamboo skewers.

Here's my little number :Bow

Horn belly with a sinew back, no wood core, tad over 4" in length, draws to a tad over 2"... and I think I could draw it back even further!, tillers pretty bad but it's good enough
I'll try and max out the draw and break the bow but it's a pretty tough little unit and I'm not sure if it will break that easily!, I'll post more pics when I conduct that test
