62 inch Osage bow

Hey gang,

Just got started on a stave that I brought off Mick some time back (God bless him), It's Osage - 62" in length and large enough that it should yield two bows so I went ahead and split it.
There's one gnarly knot in the stave but it shouldn't be to much of an issue provided I leave plenty of wood on either side of it. I'm going to aim for a 28" draw with this one, recurve the tips & make her
bend through the handle. I'll be shooting for a 50 plus pound bow as I'm hoping to take this one out on my first ever hunt when the weather improves :dance: .

I'll keep you all posted as progress progresses :lol:

Keen to see how you go with it mate. I've got a stave here drying at the moment that I cant touch till at least feb next year.

Not sure how you'll go getting it to 28 with recurved tips being a little short but I'm sure you'll work some magic on it :biggrin:

I've seen posts on American boards where they get down to 58" unbacked Osage bows with recurved tips. I've got a Sam Harper bamboo-backed Osage Static Recurve that's only 60" ntn and there's no sign of fretting at all.

Looking forward to the build though! Got some billets seasoning in the shed, ready for the day the reach ambient moisture...

Very true Nezwin, here is one such example take off the Paleoplanet website

"The bow measures 44" (421/2"ntn) in length (handle 5", bending section 11", tips 8.5"), the tips are tapering from 11/4" to 3/8" in width.The bows physical weight is 9oz" (bow is unbacked)

Here is said bow at a 22" draw, so achieving 28" out of my stave should be very much within the woods capabilities

Seems to be alot of Osage around at the moment.....sadly none of it in my garage!!!

Is that a mini-Holmegaard bow? It would explain the tiller and, looking at the limbs, it does seem Holmegaard/Mollegabet-ish.

Howdy all

Did some shaping and floor tillered her today, I decided to skip the long string and go straight to brace height. Unfortunatly I made the string to short so she has a brace height of
more than 7" which is far too much for a selfbow of this length so I'll have to make another string.

Here is what the tiller looks like upon very first bracing, fair few stiff spots to correct but not bad having only floor tillered and then braced. Bow is 1 1/2" wide in the center and remains roughly that width
untill it starts to taper in the last 8" to the tips which are 3 1/4" .... I've decided against recurving the tips, here are some pics

From the other pics on the site it looks to be more of a Holmegaard style

Cheers Fellas

Got her tillered out to 28" today !!!!......I went for the full circular tiller to reduce the stresses as much as possible, I dont have any scales but I'd estimate she'd be drawing a fraction over 50 pounds
I'll weigh her up when I get a chance and let you all know how she went.
Has taken 7/8th of an inch set, I also still need to make the longer string to lower the brace height....Here are some pics

Bloody good job there Cam! That tiller looks just about spot on I reckon. She's gonna be a top hunting bow I reckon :biggrin:

Just makes me want to get stuck into my osage stave now! Only a few more months of waiting now.
