My first recurve.....that works!

Hi guys,
I hope everyone is well, sorry I have not posted a bow in while, I have had a lot on.........
Here is a project I have been working on, a good friend of mine purchased this Pacific yew ELB from a bowyer in Canada. He was not happy with it. ( see Pics) and asked me if I could make some thing of it.

I was supposed to be a longbow with 45lb of draw at 28" and was lucky it pulled 35lb........it had a silly amount of set and one limb had a wicked twist.
But is Yew and it is a full length stave.
Not to be wasted.

First thing I did was cut of the rubbish nocks, and having decided that I would make it in to a flatbow, I flattened the back of the bow. Now I did not have a huge amount of Yew to work with thickness wise, so i prepared a hickory core and pole bamboo back, to give it some body.
I then flipped the tips with dry heat, made a form for the whole bow and glued her up.......

I then remarked the bow, cutting new tapers to suit what I had. I could not use the old horn nocks so I made some from hickory, horn and antler.

Here is where I am as of this afternoon, bow is still on a low brace and I need to tweek the tiller a little. The top limb has a slight twist that I have adjusted while tillering but the bow shoots beautifully so i will leave it. I will finish the bow off during the week.
Bow is 66" NtN, and is pulling 48lb @ 28" AMO with a 5 1/2" inch brace.....

Mick,

That was certainly a major rebuild, well done.

The owner should be proud of his 'new' bow.

Daryl.

Mick, the finished bow certainly looks good, it is indeed a great feeling when a plan comes together.

At this stage did much of the recurve pull out during the shooting in period or did being a tri laminated bow help it retain its shape?

Is this the American jargon for describing reflexing / recurving the limbs?

Hi Daryl,
The recurve has retained it's shape fully, I think the fact that it is tri laminated as you suggested is key here, although if you had posted your article on kerfing recurves a day earlier, it would have looked a little different!!!! :lol:

And yes, as far as I can gather from hanging around the PA forums quite a lot, "flipping the tips" is jargon for introducing slight recurve into your limbs.

Thanks Mick,

It would appear the expression has never had any relevance in the history of the bow when describing a limb profile.

It is similar to the miss use of words such as ‘hybrid’ to describe a bows limb profile.

From Wiki; for what it is worth.

“Flip; turn over, toss, flick and spin.
A flip is an acrobatic movement performed by vertically rotating oneself completely while in the air, usually begun by jumping.
Verb; flip (third-person singular simple present flips, present participle flipping, simple past and past participle flipped)
Transitive; to throw (as in to turn over). You need to flip the pancake onto the other side.
Transitive; to put into a quick revolving motion through a snap of the thumb and index finger.
If you can't decide which option to go for, flip a coin.
Intransitive; slang, to go berserk or crazy, I'd flip if anyone broke my phone.
To buy an asset, usually a house, improve it and sell it quickly for profit.
Computing; to invert a bit (binary digit), changing it from 0 to 1 or from 1 to 0.”

Recurve;
“A recurve bow has tips that curve away from the archer when the bow is strung. By definition, the difference between recurve and other bows is that the string touches a section of the limb when the bow is strung.
The unqualified phrase "recurve bow" or just "a recurve" in modern archery circles usually refers to a typical modern recurve bow, as used by archers in the Olympics and many other competitive events.”

Reflex;
“A reflex bow is a bow that has curved or curled arms which turn away from the archer throughout their length. When unstrung, the entire length of the bow curves forward from the belly (away from the archer), this differentiates a reflex bow from a recurve bow in which only the outer parts of the limbs turn away from the archer.”
