Lamination Thickness

#1 Post by haines146 » Thu Jan 22, 2015 8:13 am

Hello everyone,

I'm pretty excited to be making my first post.

I have been reading a lot of material on this site and have a nice folder of references to assist me in my first bow, so thank you to all who have contributed.

My question is probably a simple one to answer, when people state thickness of lamination eg. 0.030" is this a gradient of 0.030" thou over the length of an inch? So if a lamination was 34" 863.6mm at the start of the lamination does it taper away at 0.030" thou per inch along the length of the lamination?

I was doing conversion to metric and 0.030" equals 7.62mm and I think that might be a tad thick!

Thanks in advanced.

Hey Shane,

Firstly welcome to Ozbow.

Lam thickness is in thousandths of an inch for parallel laminations. ie a 0.050 thou glass backing or belly is the same all the way along.

Guys also do use and talk about tapers in laminations in thousandths of an inch per inch, but the taper is much less that a parallel lam thickness and they will generally refer to it is a "tapered" lam at whatever the taper may be, a 0.005 thou tapered lam for instance...

Best to get a set of callipers that can do metric and imperial if you're wanting to make glass bows because most of the stuff is from the states and standard is imperial (inches).

Hope that helps.

I thought I answered your post but it must have disappeared into the Ether.as Colin says lams are measured at butt thickness, that is thickest part of the lam for tapered lams.If a lam was 35'' long, .070 at butt end, and had a taper rate of .001 then the thin end of the lam would be .030 thick. Conversely if it was .002 taper then you're in trouble! The thin end would disappear!
