Here is the result of the patch, in the words of one of my mates, its "frankenbow".............
Tillering tomorrow.

Very nice work on the bows, tillering appears to be spot on.

The patch on the second stave has fitted well so hopefully the bow will retain its integrity when finished.

That patch (Dutchman) is a superb job. It won't come off that bow because you have a nice long and shallow radiused joint into which you fit it. Plenty of glue surface there. I did one on another Yew bow, but not nearly so big as that one. Those limbs on that 40lber whip very nicely indeed.

cmoore is amazed at the bow's bulk in such a low draw weight bow, but that is how it turns out when you have a hugely overbuilt bow and from a wood specie with has a fairly low density. On the denser woods like Osage and similar, you often have very spindly ELBs at quite heavy draw weights with not much to hang onto.

I have a soft spot for Yew bows, I have one that Nick Lintern made for me from a stave brought over from the states, but I have not shot it at all this year, too much to do at work and lower back problems have stuffed up my shooting time.

Looks like you have done a great save on the bow congratulations Mick.

Here is the second bow.
77" NtN, 30mm x 30mm Handle. Mary Rose lay out. Semi crowned back, bow would not move till I crowned the back. Much stiffer than my first stave, which is weird as there are more growth rings per inch on the 40 lb er. Red Deer Nocks in White.
Followed the contours of the natural back as much as possible, VERY pretty bow lovely to work with. The natural back is intact except where I had the drama with the knot. Tiller is a bit stiff in the handle, as to be expected with a splice. My draw is only 27", bow comes around more at 30".
Bow is currently 60lb @ 28" AMO. I am expecting this to drop off, I will shoot the bow in tomorrow and next weekend........ Beautiful stave, this!

Have you got any arrows there to get back to 30? or just shooting in at a normal draw to keep it safe on the splice in the handle?

There's just something about that crowned back ay, no idea what it is but it just works.

I think Im going to have to bite the bullet and order a full length stave or 2 now.

I am just shooting her in at normal draw length until she backs off then I will re-check the tiller and then I might unwind a bit. Just keeping an eye on things..................

Crowning the back IMO makes these bows, they go round easier and are much easier to tiller without that harshness in the draw. This is what I have found anyway.

I will be getting a couple of full staves next time I order from Carson as well................ just have to move 2 or 3 i have lying around here first!!!!!!
Better off to get two or three staves I reckon, as the shipping will be the same as if you get one. Have to check that and get a quote I reckon. Word of warning, once you go down the yew path, you will be REALLY addicted! There is something about yew...............lol

Beautiful work mick! ... Two lovely looking bows that knot was nicely dealt with aswell, although I have seen plenty of yew selfbows on the web that have been full of knots like that and survived but I guess it's better to be safe than sorry.

Those bows are gonna last a long time!, that yew is hardly working! Good work mick keep em coming! ... what are you planning to do with that Osage you have?

Maybe the taxine has a habit-forming characteristic to it?

Yea I agreed with you there Mick, they always seem to draw out really smooth compared to a flat back.

Let me know when you going to order one and I'll get one as well and we can go halves in the shipping.

Definitely something I want to have a go at, even if the stave sits for a bit while I get my confidence up to actually shape it haha.
