Advice needed for equipment

#1 Post by Black Hood » Mon Aug 25, 2014 6:16 pm

Hello much more experienced bowyers

I am just about to begin making my first bow and I need some advice in regards to what equipment I should get. So far I have the following:

1. Coping Saw
2. Flat/ rounded rasp
3. Bench Vice

Is there anything else I would need?

Thanks
-Pete

Nah, seriously,,,,,,
A good spoke shave, a hand plane, A 1 metre Steel ruler, a square, A set of cabinet scrapers, A chisel, a sharpening stone for chisel and spoke shave, Flat and round files, copious amounts of sand paper, a belt sander is really handy but not essential.............. tite bond III and or Techniglue and last but not least, a few coldies in the fridge and a shoulder to cry on when it goe's wrong!
Welcome to Bowmaking!

Mick.

My favourite bow making tool is definitely the japanese 'shinto' rasp - you get them at Carbatec. I've just finished using one to make a hickory flat bow- it was the only wood removal tool I used from 2x1 inch board to finished, unsanded bow. $40 excellently spent!
