Backing Timbers

#1 Post by hunterguy1991 » Sun Jul 20, 2014 9:06 pm

Hey all,

So I've been trying to compile a list of timbers that can be used for backing bows. Apart from all the obvious choices, pole bamboo and hickory, what are some other timbers that can be used??

I have looked through a timber properties page that was put on here a little while back and highlighted some that are fairly similar to hickory and come up with silver ash and mountain ash as alternates as their properties are pretty similar.

Are there any others that can be used?

Also, when using Hickory as a backing, how sensitive is it to the grain orientation? Can a lamination be cut from a piece with no regard for the grain direction and still hold up?

Cheers guys,

Colin
