couple of new ones.

#1 Post by bigbob » Sat May 17, 2014 11:29 am

Few shots here of couple of new ones I've recently made , both have to have finish coats but the humid weather is no good for spraying finish. This bow is one I've made for myself with Brigalow/ Crows Ash riser and black phenolic accents , 'boo core and Brigalow belly lams. It should look good once I get the gloss finish done later. It's a good weight for trad shoots at 44# at 28''

This one was made for a client and is Red Palm/ PNG Walnut riser and natural 'boo belly lams as well as the core. It's a 'cacky' hander and is 50# at 28'' It also has deer antler overlays on the belly ramps. The accent strips in the riser are actually thin veneers of actionwood.

Well done Bob, you have been a busy boy.

Always good to see your bows Bob, your timber combos are getting more and more classy I reckon. Good stuff!

Thanks Mika and Steve. Yep Steve that's exactly the problem I have with left handed bows. Turned myself in knots trying to test it myself , managed to get a left hander to do the honors while I stood close by. Actually worked as bow is whisper quiet.

My Only lefties have been for Kevin so he has shot them for me before I finish them off, It is hard to relinquish that part of the process. Steve

I know exactly what you mean Steve. I have a jig I use for tillering and limb timing which usually gets things very close but one can't beat actually having a few shots, checking optimum brace, and nock position oneself.

Very nice Bob, still like that Red palm  .

I know where you're all coming from with the left handed thing, I've made quite a few now but it's always a bit disconcerting  , so much so I now write it in big letters diagonally across the page of my order book. I recently sent a bow to longbow steve to put in his shop cause I got the handing wrong  , not a good feeling when the client rings you when they receive their bow to tell you the bow is beautiful but is no good to them  .

Back to using palm woods in bows, I recently made another Raptor (a lefty by coincidence) with all Black Palm limbs (no bamboo core) and it seemed to be very fast, so I tested it though the crono and found I had picked up another six feet per second in arrow speed, Using 10 carbon arrows of 9 grains/pound of draw weight (450 grains. The bow is 50@#28") and a 28" draw, I got speeds between 194 fps and 203fps with an average speed of 197 fps. Very happy with that, as was the client.
Has anyone else noticed something like this when using Palm woods in there limbs?

I was talking to a guy in the Philippines when last over there who makes very high end furniture of unbelievable quality and he said he believed, or had the data [ not sure which now] that palm has a higher tensile strength than bamboo. I have been slack lately with my chrono and havent used it recently at all but my gut reaction is similar to yours , in that using it as belly lams does seem to make a faster bow but the prohibitive cost of the larger lengths suitable to cut lams form precludes me from further use as lams. My bows go toward the lower end of the scale and the asking price doesn't justify the purchase price for palm as lams unless the buyer is prepared to step up.

Are you 'borrowing' a proven design rather than trying to re invent the wheel?

Not much chance of me trying to re invent the wheel, Daryl so am going with a slightly modified [as in cosmetic] design that has been around for quite a while.
