Hi Steve.

Carbonised. Which I take to mean it has been autoclaved.

"carbonising completely alters the colour of bamboo flooring materials.

The carbonising process does soften the bamboo, but this doesn't negatively affect its strength or resiliency as a flooring material.

Q: "So, if carbonized bamboo isn't stronger than regular bamboo, does this mean it is softer?"

Yes. Bamboo flooring subjected to the carbonization process is about 1/3 softer than regular bamboo. However, the surface is treated with the aluminium oxide finish that is customary for many pre-finished flooring products.

Thus, carbonized bamboo can stand up to normal wear."

yep someone has made a name up for carbonised bamboo flooring in the bow industry now, carbonising bamboo flooring is only done to change the colour of the bamboo, to give an even colour right through the timber as opposed to staining which only penetrates so far, different cook times and temps will result in different shades. It also ends up about 1/3 softer than regular bamboo flooring after the process which is why carbonised bamboo flooring is treated with aluminium oxide to help it stand up to normal wear conditions, if you want to make a quicker bow with a lighter limb stack go with carbon fibre IMO.

"Our darker product is created using a steam-heating process that caramelises the sugar and starch compounds in the bamboo."

Originally the product was referred to as caramelised bamboo, perhaps replacing caramelised with carbonised implied a superior product.
