New interesting timber

#1 Post by Flatliner » Sun Jan 19, 2014 6:51 pm

I was given a couple of small logs of this a while back. Today I was cutting up an off-cut to see what it was like and found that the perfect quarter cut looks like this.
The faces in the photo are about 20 mm wide. the wood in the background is Sandalwood.

Pretty specky hey  8) . The guy that gave it to me called it Orange Boxwood but I can't find that in any of my books. It's too soft to use as a structural timber in a bow but will make some nice features.

That makes the eyes go funny just looking at it. Amazing grain pattern. I have never heard of it before.

That looks fantastic, I'd be interested to know what timber it really is when you find out.

Unreal Rob, pity it might be a bit soft for bows. imagine it as lams or riser features!

I think it's actually a Kind of Desert Oak.

Thats psychedelic baby.. LOL Cant wait to see what you do with that Rob, nice find.

No properties but the description may help you find some more of it.

However the timber in this article looks quite different

Never seen it before but I'll lay odds it's a Grevillea, I immediately thought it would make nice Knife Scales
