nearly finished the lightest glass bow I've made to date at 28#. even with the light weight i decided to go with 4 lams still as it is easy to calculate stack etc, but have a lingering feeling the extra glue lines may add to strength but could also lose a little due to extra mass. riser is silver Ash/ PNG Walnut with gidgee accent strips

Nock overlays from white/black phenolic and ringed Gidgee which is quite hard to source, but very nice in appearance. This bow still has to have some finish work done and as usual is fitted with the best of strings supplied by Steve of Wallace woods.

Looks the part Bob. That Ringed Gidgee sure is nice stuff.

Thanks Jeff. Ringed Gidgee is terrific for nocks etc and small accent strips but I'd be careful using large sections such as riser blocks as apparently each noticeable ring is in some way not of the same structural integrity as the rest of 'parent' wood.

You and me both Rod, I'm investigating some 2 part epoxy i might be able to use an airbrush on.
Re the ringed gidgee Jeff, apparently story goes an American bowyer got some from same source as me and used it in a bow. not sure where exactly either riser or limb veneers [more likely] ans suffered bigtime failure.
Thanks John appreciated.

I would hardly think it would be a problem when used as veneers because they are so thin. Perhaps the glue didn't take to it very well?

In my limited experience with it , mainly as accent pieces and overlays it has glued very well, but judging by the ringed sections in it, it might fail along these lines if for example they are more porous and of a different fibrous consistency than the main body of wood. Still it sure is very attractive, and only occurs apparently in limited trees, something like fiddleback grain in other species. Every tree is totally different.

It certainly is a beautiful wood.

yep just wish it was easier to obtain! Would use it a lot more in risers.

thanks Dan ,bit of a story about the Walnut. It is a bit from two small pieces i almost accidentally saved before a 7m tree was reduced to wood chip--Sob sob.Irony is I had a big log of it half onto my ute tray before i decided it probably wouldn't be any good as timber and turfed it off!

Nice little bow Bob.
That's a tragedy about the PNG Walnut mate it's very hard to come by too like the ringed Gidgee.

yeah that happened couple years back and still butt kick myself every morning when I get up! I was so close to putting that big log, about 2m long and 250mm thick in the ute. Actually had on end on the tailgate and then dropped it off. Might have a big supply of conkerberry coming in a month or two, supposed to be solid with no pipe! That should make things interesting!

Nice bow.

I've been a fan of that style of riser for a while. How do you go about it? Unless it was all straight lines, all my efforts'd be horribly gappy.

Thanks Dave. I make each one to suit the particular person, need to know their build and hand size ,ie very small, medium or large and scale each to suit.I guess that just goes without saying. The 'swell' itself is usually close to static centreline and the 'valleys' are evenly spaced each side. The overall height of the riser is of course governed by the size of hand , generally around 1/34'' at centre .All of it is mainly 'eyeball' stuff to get symmetry and feel in the hand.
