First 2 Wood Carving Projects - Knife Handle and Large Spoon

#1 Post by perry » Wed Apr 03, 2013 9:56 am

Morning Folks,

just finished my second Wood Carving Project, a Large Spoon. Over the Weekend I was thinking my Tucker Box needs a Large Spoon and as I'm on Holidays I thought I may as well brush up on my meagre Carving Skills. Tools used where a Tomahawk to rough it out, the pictured Knife, a Spoon Knife which I used for the first time and a Farriers Rasp. I only had a scrap piece of Pine. I drilled the hole with the tip of the Knife and then tidied it up with a piece of Hardwood I carved to fit into an Handrill. As I suspected it slightly scorched the Wood and next time I play will be to create fire with my modern Firedrill !!!!

It took me quite a few Hours, when you consider you can buy 3 similar sized Spoons for $1 at Crazy Clarks it's hardly worth while but I learned more about Carving and have a handy Utencil which you can't put a price on. I have rubbed Olive Oil into the Spoon

A while back I cut 5" off the Hickory Handle of my Cold Steel Tomahawk so it would balance better and be more compact. This Blade is an old 1/2 Tang Solingen Carbon Steel Blade. I used a Stainless Pin and Bote Cote Epoxy to secure the Blade in the Handle. I tapered the Handle using a Rasp and Sandpaper. It is Sealed with Tru Oil Gun Stock Finish.

Back in January whilst out Bow Hunting I loaned it to my Hunting Mate to retreive his Broadhead lodged inside the Body Cavity of a Goat and he reported to me the Handle was Ok BUT - was a little Slippery so I took the opportunity to Carve my First Forest Spirit into the Handle. Hickory is tough stuff and it tested my patience. I made a few errors, the biggest being the Spirit looks "Constipated" but I improved on that with my second effort

Excellent work Jacko

I think the el cheapos might not be made of hickory and pine, and definately would not survive more than a month.
I thought the carving was of a well known Bowyer on this forum

Well done Jacko, you've got real talent for this kind of handicraft mate!

Hey Rob, you're being mighty kind to that bowyer, if you ask me!

Thanks for the kind comments Folks,

Rob I'm not sure his heads that Pointy

I reckon that so many years with all my other Archery related Crafts like making Bows, Arrows, Leather Work etc holds me in good stead with Hand Tools, long way from the quality of work like in the pic / link you posted Buranarra.

I like to jump in and refine things as I go. Nice tutorial , I'll read that later - I have a Leathercraft stamp that gives the same Pattern, my minds working already ???? ---- Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm
