Second Last Chapter: ‘The Doomed Bow.’

#1 Post by greybeard » Mon Nov 07, 2011 3:14 pm

The last update on the ‘doomed’ bow was lost when the site crashed.

The original bow was shortened by 4” to make it 68” n to n.

To further test the hard rock maple the string nocks were cut the opposite way so the back became the belly.

Some minor re tillering was done to correct a previous mistake. Draw weight settled in at 42# @ 28”.

A little creaking sound was heard during the first couple of draws but it disappeared as the limbs settled in, nothing to be too concerned about.

I have probably pushed this piece of hard rock maple to its limits but if we do not try we will never find out.

During the re birth of the bow I most likely went against most of the accepted practices when making selfbows.

All growth rings on the back of the bow have been violated and to further test the hard rock maple deep string grooves were filed across the back of the bow.

A fast flite Flemish twist string and leather wrap add the final touch.

Draw weight comes in early and is smooth to 28”. The bow is comfortable in the hand and is shock free. String follow has settled in at a little under ¾”.

The re birthed bow was used at the Wisemans Ferry and Gympie trad shoots as well as being shot on a weekly basis at the club.

Outers' gunstock stain and wood filler was used to colour the hard rock maple and finished with a few coats of Estapol clear satin finish.

The bow is a pleasure to shoot so the glass laminated bows can now gather dust on the bow rack.

Full draw and a clean release, eleven grains per pound.

All going well it may be some time before I have to write the last chapter.

A fascinating tale - been enjoying it very much.
Are you well informed or is your news limited?

First of all I must say it was a pleasure I finaly got to meet you at Wisemans.

I didn't get to see the bow in action but what you have done with this bow is facinating! I take sheer delight when some one takes the brain dead book of rules and treats it with all the contempt it deserves

Legend mate!!

Very interesting indeed how this bow has turned out! If it was going to fail I think it would have by now.
