i am attempting to build a sander , had a few idea's and tossed them out ,this is the one i am going ahead with at the moment .
it use's my small penturning lathe as a drive source ( 5 speed sander ).
i think it will maybe fit my bigger woodlathe too ( 5 speed foward and reverse ) .
it is built on a 3/4 inch stainless shaft which fits into my collet chuck so i can remove or fit it in a few minutes .
next on the agenda is some kind of hight adjustment for the bed but i dont have a lot of room on this lathe to work with in the hight dept . on the other lathe i will have heaps of room though.

Re: building a sander
If you are going to use that for doing laminations then you have plenty of room. I think your biggest problem will be limiting any variance in the gap between the sander and the bed from one side to the other. Please keep us up to date with your progress.

Re: building a sander
I will be watching this one as I have considered building one myself, I have a motor and am looking for alternative ideas.

Re: building a sander
i have got 2 4inch steel hinges on the back edge of the flat bed boards all i have to do is make a hight adjuster to go on the front of the 2 boards , i still have to put a bolt down through the bottom board through the gap in the bed rails to a plate or some thing , although it does not move but just to secure it . the bottom board has a cleat that i ran through the my thicknesser so that it is a neat fit between the bed rails so it cant move around and is held square at 90degres to the bed and the sanding drum .
i cant explain things to good ill go take a pic .
hang on .
i have about 45mm between the drum and the board on this lathe which should be all i need at the moment ,but i will have about 7 inches clearance or more on the other lathe .
got to work out the best method of attaching the sand paper yet too.

Re: building a sander
Heya.
I've been looking into doing the same thing for a while now. In fact, that was one of the justifications I used in my head to buy the lathe in the first place
Plenty of guides available online. Have a look at:
http://www.stwt.org/drumsander.pdf
or
http://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/showt ... ess-Sander
Main problem with these seems to be the possibility of launching your Sanding-In-Progress piece across the shed.
Feed in carefully, against the action of the drum; and only take a few mm off at a time.
