To answer you Dennis. The stave was a split section of trunk, not a sapling. We picked it because it was the largest and straightest grained. My guess is the tree would have been about 1-12 inches in diameter. Interestingly, Nick was surprised how long it took to get down to a reasonable moisture content. Needless to say, it's also a fair bit weightier than Eoin's continental and pacific yew bows.

Attached a couple more poor quality pics of the grain etc that Nick sent me during the build.

That certainly is an impressive bow. The differentiation between the sapwood and the heartwood is just like Yew and Osage Orange and clearly works just the same in tension. It is certainly a handful. Well done, indeed.
