Blonde with fake tan

#1 Post by longbow steve » Mon Nov 29, 2010 10:05 am

As a warm up for a couple of staves I thought I would get back into wood bow building shape with a simple board bow. American White Ash 64"NTN 60#@28". Chestnut stain with Red Deer tips and Fast flight string.

It looks good Steve; it should do well on the ferrals. How much shorter is the bottom limb to the top limb?

Nice stained bow.

That's great! Well done, Steve.

Thanks Craig and Steven, it shoots well. No noticable handshock. I havent tested the speed but estimate it to be equal to a straight laid glass bow of the same weight. Steve

Really nice looking bow Steve. Impressive that you estimate its speed to be equal to a straight laid glass bow of the same weight. The only piece of American Ash board I tried looked with the benefit of hindsight to be a bit low in moisture content. Any secrets there? Just wondered what brand of chesnut stain you used? Good that with reinforced tips that it takes fast-flight.

You don't need reinforced tips to use FF or DF strings. None of our self bows (even horn tipped ones) have any tip overlays and there has never been any problems caused from the non stretch strings.

Hi Simon, Cabots brand of stain. I will confirm the speed in the future when at the club but going by arrow drop using a 600gr arrow it is up there.
I did a bit of research on Ash prior and during making this bow and came across references that said it likes a low moisture content but at the moment up here it is 99% so equilibrium may be around 12%? I did toast this with a heat gun on the belly after final tiller then let it regain moisture for 3-4 days. Maybe you could try again now the weather is favourable?
Dimension for this bow is 2" down to 3/8". 12" handle fade to fade 64" NTN. I made the limbs paralell all the way from fade to tip 11mm yeilds 60# with a slightly rounded belly.
The bow would be fine without tips for FF as when shooting in etc I noticed no indentation from the sting loops despite them being thin.

Thanks Steve

The air is certainly not lacking moisture at the moment; point well made and maybe time to try again. I'm grateful for the feedback.

Nice work Steve,

Playing with wood is definitely an enjoyable and rewarding break from fibreglass.

I have found that by making the occasional wood bow helps me to re-hone my tillering skills.

Engineered laminated bows come off the form almost spot on tiller.

With the bow being asymmetrical is the tiller zero or a bit plus/minus?

In the photo 100_2988.JPG is the bow drawn to 28”?

It may be the angle that the photo was taken from but for a 64” ntn bow [if at a 28” draw] you have managed to keep the limb to string angle below 90 degrees.

Keep up the good work and hopefully it will inspire others who visit this site to have a go.

Daryl.
"And you must not stick for a groat or twelvepence more than another man would give, if it be a good bow.

Thanks Daryl, Sure is a good break from the glass. I put 3-5 mm positive tiller in my asym' bows. My draw length is 28" + or - a fraction and I am at anchor in the photo . I hadn't looked at the string angle :). Steve
