hand making arra shafts
first get some wood
then cut it into 10mm sticks
start planing
keep checking for roundness
when its close start sanding
and check the amo
once spine, weight and roundness are right your shaft has been made
now to make the arra varnish/paint and put on tips and tails i put the fethers on by useing hessian nails
these arras are my partners finished set they were all the same spine and 15grains between the heavest and the lightest
cheers nev...

Good onya Nev! That's exactly what I wanted someone to post! Glenn did one years ago, but after the site changed servers you could no longer access it. This is excellent.
Lately, if life were treating me any better, I'd be suspicious of it's motives!

Good to see Nev; I have made more than a few that way myself. What wood are you using to make the shafts there?

a good mate gave me a block of sitka spruce its 30'' long so not a lot of room for mistakes, i know cos i stuffed a couple up but i got used to it .and i recon i'll have enough to make a couple a hundred shafts and the way my lot go through arras i'll need em i for got on the making of im using varnish that i put food colouring in and it works quite well, i'll be playing with more colours and see what else i can come up with

Thanks Nev; it looks like it is good to work with. I use Oregon and it also is good to work with. Thanks once again for posting up your arra making process.

Glad you did that nev , the original pictures I saw "elsewhere" were crying out for the full story to be told.

Hi Nev
Well after Ballarat you must be back into the workshop making more of these beauties.
Did I see Roman walking around on Sunday taking photos because he was out of arrows.
He is taking the Lilydale Broken Arra award seriously
Good to see you and the family enjoying yourself on the weekend.
Cheers Tony
