While you were shooting I knocked up an armguard

#1 Post by stringnstik » Mon Sep 13, 2010 8:26 am

HI all,
Firstly I was on call this w/e and thus for a small 2hour block of work when it came, I was unable to attend Lilydale. Not happy.
However whilst waiting for the call I knocked this up.

Just trying some different techniques and todays challenge was "no sewing".

This called for rivets on the buttons, I wasnt sure if the antler buttons (thanks again Steve) would handle the impact but they are mighty beasts. Truly humbled by their resilience.
The next trick was attaching the strapping without sewing a hem or having hooks.
So i came up with this thread thru idea. There is no strapping on the underneath to poke into your arm and the leather grips well. Note the locking strip at the bottom right. Once adjusted, takes about a minute. It all stays put. The little leather tags were simply hole punched in the corners(to stop possible leather tear) then sliced.
Its thick leather so it was a case of wetting and stretching the tags up. Just put a welding rod thru em all until it dryed.
Yes the (white) elastic cord takes leather dye well and I managed a good colour match.

All in all happy with the result.

The holes?
erm well I umm fell victim to my arty side for a few seconds :)

I like your craftworking skills mate no doubt about it! My comments are never meant to be negative about your work but I just prefer some designs over others. If we all liked the same things though life would be boring huh. :D

Looks like a good durable piece of craft work there Mark. Did you get the streaky finish with some sort of die or is the leather supplied like that.

Cheers, Rod

HI rod, In this case the leather came like that. I often dig thru the bins at the leather shop and get remnants. Being chrome I couldnt emboss as normal so I added the holes etc for style :)

Good effort stringnstik, innovation is always fun.

Understand exactly where your coming from. Ratting through the off cuts and remnants is the only way to go especially when your trying new idea's. Most of the leather I've bought over the years would be regarded as reject, offcuts or poor. I love the challenge of turning so called scrap into something functional, practical and good looking.

I too am trying to come up with a Armguard shock cord attachment system that is adjustable, good looking, durable and when needed easy to replace the shock cord. A long heavy leather lace may be a commonly used system but it's cumbersome and not very handy.
