just a quick question , is there a single book i should look for that would get me started on building a bow, long and or recurve without buying the 4 volumes of bowyers bible .
this is for some one that knows zero about bows and arra's .

John Clark at Ausbow industries has a book that will give you a bit of an idea,if you mean laminated bows

Talk nicely to your local library and ask them to get Bowyers Bibles. I did and they got them in.
Its one way for them to know what their customers want.

Texx, if you are truely ready to have a go at building a bow you need to get yourself a copy of a book called "The Bowyer's Craft by Jay Massey". It has all the information that will assist you in understanding what is involved in making a bow and all the required gear to go with it. So good luck..........Bill

The bent stick by Paul Comstock is pretty good.

I second Looseplucker's recommendation re "The Bent Stick" by Paul Comstock if your interest lies in self bows. I actually do have the 4 volumes of the Bowyers Bible and they are good reading, but the Bent Stick is a great condensed mine of information. I guess a plus for me was the identification and recommendation re a number of appropriate timbers other that osage orange and yew.
