First 2 bows

#1 Post by bowshu » Fri Aug 27, 2010 10:52 pm

Hi Guy`s
Just started making bows a couple of months ago here are the first 2 the first one, made me work to get a bow out of but we got there sort of, well it is a shooter(58"NTN 65# @ 27) put it that way! It came out of a mistake and set the platform for a nice 58" bow that shoots great, I made a form for a long bow(68") with a recurve but the recurve was to much for the thin limb tips(wanted to say hello to each other side ways) so the only thing to do was cut it down(turned out a 100 +#Bow on the formula used) so I had a bit of work to do The limbs are about the same thickness all the way down and had to taper them back to the belly to get the weight down still have a slight twist on one tip but she still shoots good!! I have made 5 all up on this template including the First bow messing around with formula`s I have 1 bow 54#@ 28",1 bow 55# @ 28",1 bow 56# @28" shooting a 512 gn -530 gn arrow @ 173- 177fps @ 28" Draw & 1 bow 68 @ 27" all 58"NTN also have made 2 recurve type bows first 1 turned out spot on 60" NTN 64# @ 27" but the 2nd one had to test me and got a limb twist in one limb and could not get it out so I did the CHOP again this one turned out 52"NTN 75# @ 27" and shoots good!!I think I need help is there someone to help with this addiction, as I just have the bug and just want to make bows will post photo`s of other bows when I can in between the addiction!!!

Cheers Bowshu

Hey bowshu great lookin' bows. The patterns and colour in the riser remind me alot of an aboriginal art. Unique in a bow and pretty damn cool. 8)

Good to see another person making bows nice work interesting you have trouble with the limb twisting I have never(lucky)had that issue with the longbows.

Very nice Bowshu. Regarding the limb twist, check your forms are square and have some metal on them as they can shift in the hotbox. Make sure your lams are ground accurately and the bow is layed out accurately.
Looks like Zebrano bamboo used as a lam? Welldone, you have tried a lot of things early on. Steve

Congrats Mark well done!!! Your bows remind me very much of the Bear semi-recurves that were popular back in the 1950's.

You sure had to take a lot of weight off that one bow but as you say at least it is a shooter now. I look forward to seeing your other bows and hopefully some game taken with them. :D

Retro Cool , good efforts. I like your eye for colour as well, suits your finished design very well

Gidday Bowshu,

I haven't built a bow yet but have been reading avidly for over 12 months while I get the gear together.

Your bows look really good but I have a question regarding the length. Yours bows seem very short (NTN) for the 27 - 28 draw length, according to what I've read 64-66" NTN would be the target (I realise you were looking for 68" to begin with). Do you reckon the shorter NTN length will affect the longevity or have some other affect of the bows?

I am not knocking them at all, in fact I reckon power to you if you can get over the initial twist problem and still end up with good shooters. I also think it would be a distinct benefit in the bush to have your bow 10-12 inches shorter. Just wondering why aren't all longbows shorter (other than they would then be shortbows  ).

Anyway, top looking bows mate (I wont be that adventurous with my first try I can tell you) and I hope you really enjoy shooting them as a reward for your hard work.

Cheers, Rod

Hi Rod,
Mate I was over adventurous with the First bow as I wanted to put a recurve tip on it as it goes to prove it was to much I could probably use the form as a recurve form instead but I was fortunate to only put a 14-15 inch handle in as I wanted more working limb ,anyway I am a big fan of the short bows(hunting in mind) as I purchased a Ron Leclair Shrew 56" NTN 64# @ 27.5" 2nd Hand as there is close to a 2 year wait for a new one and it is a nice little shooter and the lenght of these bows should not impact on the service life off the bow. So as for lenght what I have read is longer bows are more forgiving to shoot and give a better cast, as for all the bows I have made on this form at the short lenght with the new formula I have not had any problems with limb twist so will play around and look at making a 60" & 62" bow and see what happens also the big plus is less laminations for the same poundage so more bang for your buck I will post a photo of the form and the bow with the twist will also post photo`s of bows 3 & 4

I really like the riser designs. They are different to all other designs that I have seen before.
