Finally a great finish..
As many know I have had some dramas with the finish I have been putting on bows.It was easy to get and I never really looked too hard at something better but was never happy with the high gloss finish it ended up which ment rubbing down with steel wool and a finish that stayed soft for ages(over a week). On recomendation from the wood work shop he got some product in for me to try and I will be dropping a sixpack into him this week because this is the final finish I have allways wanted straight from the gun and is SO easy to work with even I can get a finish like the top end customs from the the US.
Now some details for you all...
First it only comes in bulk form so no spray cans but if you are making a few bows it would be worth getting a cheap compressor just to use this stuff honestly. When I say bulk it is only a ltr tin which cost about 35 bucks but I did 3 coats and used under a cup full so it will go a long way and uses general purpose thinners so that is a plus.
The first product is a Nitro Cellulose sanding filler used to fill the grain on some timbers but I am still not sure on this as it seemed to wash out the timber colour a bit but without being able to check with the shop before using I may have to adjust my method a little and I will get back to you all on that one as it did fill the grain nice and is so easy to sand it is a joke.
The other is a top coat clear 60% gloss that comes to suit the filler and this stuff is awsome..
Drying times are 10mins dust free
Tack free 16 mins
Hard dry 4 hours.
And when it says hard dry it IS hard no dinting the finish laying the bow down after just afew hours so it makes finishing the bows so much easier. The 60% gloss is a nice balance of gloss and I was even experimenting a little with spraying it slightly dry for the sort of wet and dry finish that is not so glarey and comes on nice customs. In the pics here I put in on without the filler and the coverage and finish was lovley with the timber looking more natural with great colours
It says on the label it alcohol, heat and water resistant and can be applied over spirit stains and the fillers.
Both products come from PPG Industries and are classed as INdustrial coatings instead of the hobby type stuff I have been using.
If you have trouble getting it let me know and I will put up my supplier details..
Cheers KIM..

It's the great, big, broad land 'way up yonder,
It's the forests where silence has lease;
It's the beauty that thrills me with wonder,
It's the stillness that fills me with peace.

It looks great Kim.
You may know this already, but if you don't, then here's a little tip I learnt from Greybeard ...
You can add considerably to the texture and finish of a bow by using some fine cutting compound as used in the automotive industry. You just rub it on with a rag and then rub it all off again. It can be used on clear surfaces, regardless of what it might say on the can. You will end up with a incredibly nice looking finish by doing this, as it takes away any overspray. It certainly worked for me when I was refinishing some of my older bows.
Cheers
Mick

There is no use focusing on aiming if you don't execute the shot well enough to hit what your are aiming at.

Thanks guys I had very little input with making this bow I have just finished the limb tips and put the clear on.It was made by Glenn when he was still making bows last year but there was a couple of things he was not happy with at the time so it has now been finished and will be going to a very good mate of mine.Mike I have used that tip for some time but this finish comes out like that straight from the gun.

Re: Finally a great finish..
But is that Brazilian Bloodwood in the handle did you hurt your widdle finger mate.
Re: Finally a great finish..
Sorry mate to miss your questions it is PADUKE(SP) and Cocomathingy with a purple heart insert in the riser.
The black on the finger is paint from cresting arrows for Maggie today I will fletch them toomorrow.I have been given a week forced holiday after a nasty and very imbarrasing run in with the doc. Dressings getting redone every day so a whole week in the shed making stuff because I cant really SIT but I can stand at the work bench.
Cheers KIM

sounds like the same stuff that ken recommended to me a couple of weeks back for my turned bowls and spindle turnings , i asked him for a hard wearing satin style finish and i think this is the same stuff.
i will probably pick some up from ken next week while in toowoomba cos i need some for a hat stand i am making.
oh yeah and G,day every one .
