An old trick for rust

#1 Post by Buranurra » Fri Feb 15, 2013 2:39 pm

... Last night I dug out an old file from the shed and it was quite rusty.

I used a tall thin glass container and filled it with cheap white vinegar, pop the file in, you will see micro bubbles rising off the surface. , the next morning it is all clean and revitalised. I imagine this would work a treat on rusty broadheads.

Most probably know this but thought I would share anyway.

something I had long forgotten but glad you managed to jog my old befuddled memory for one  We used to use it to clean old pennies. Yeah I know! that was during the age of the dinosaurs

molasses does the same job.

Using a battery charger for electrolysis works well too. It even loosened up an old pair of fencing pliers I'd lost for years that were all rusty and siezed up. This bloke explains it rather well.

... at around $1.50 for 2L of the cheap vinegar, it's pretty hard to beat IMO

when u wash your car, if you wipe the outside of the windows with white vinegar afterwards it stops the formation of rainspots.

White vinegar is brilliant for cleaning hands after a glue up - espesh for CA techniglue. I keep vinegar in the workshop. I wonder how it would go for treating timber before glueing - like using acetone on oily woods. Anyone tried that?

I also use vinegar when cleaning the kitchen - mopping floors etc. Much more preferable to bleach.

I use vinegar or metho cleaning shafts or wraps before fletching. I also soak points after roughing the insides before glueing.
Done that for a few years, improved the outcome for me.

I remember the cocaine in coca cola also Roadie, and If I remember correctly an aspirin was the thing to add to for the required effect!

We are showing our age now!

I not quite 50 and I well remember the saying about little old Dear's should take a Bex, drink a Coke and have a lay down

We use Vinegar for cleaning also, great for cleaning after the local Tom Cat has left his mark, they don't seem to re spray after cleaning with Vinegar

I did not know that about Vinegar cleaning Rusty Files, will try it on a old Rusty File that I have earmarked for a knife.

Have used Vinegar to add a Patina to a Carbon Steel Knife Blade, leaves a lovelly etched grey type finish

Good call perry I had no idea about the tomcat thing, a great handy gem. I have also used white vinegar with some iron nails left in for a week or so to wipe over timber and bring the grain out before sealing, makes the grain jump out.
If your not having fun, your doing it for all the wrong reasons

Yeah I've done that too. I used vinegar to rust some nails, then dissolved the rust in some tannin (concentrate of the strongest tea I could find). It makes the wood almost black.
