Leather supplies
G'day guys.
I've been doing a bit of looking around for some decent and reasonably cheap suppliers of leather.
I'm wanting stuff that is atleast 3mm think for a potential project I have in mind.
I dont' mind if it's off cuts as long as the minimum dimensions are 1.5" X 4-5"
Colour wise I'm wanting either browns, Tans or Black
If you leather workers or anyone else out there could point me in the right direction it would be most appreciated.
I'd prefer an Australian based supplier but may look OS if the price is right.
In the mean time I'll keep looking.
Thanks in Advance
Mick

Re: Leather supplies
I have purchased my leather from this place for many years. They have been great to deal with. http://www.packerleather.com/contact.html

Mick
Both Greenhalgh Tannery based in Victoria and Birdsall (Sydney?) are good to deal with...they certainly sell whole hides and backs in a range of thicknesses (up to 3.5mm). Not sure that they offer offcuts though.

these folks have lots of good stuff, they will send you a catalogue happily and are helpful with beginners questions, good on the phone and with email responses
Let us know what you are making!

But the leather will be one part of a complete item, which will be archery related .
All will be revealed in time once I get set up with materials and a name for it.

Re: Leather supplies
For any the Canberra region who are interested there is a Hiscocks saddlery (in Queanbeyan), and they do apron cuts of really good leather and suede for between $20 and $30 - these are about 30/40cm x 70cm
Are you well informed or is your news limited?

Re: Leather supplies
Mick
Couldnt be sure, but certainly the suede I bought was thick enough for a handle grip or a lightweight quiver. I have not measured but am pretty sure it is somewhere between 1 and 2mm, probably closer to 1mm just a tad over. I'll measure this evening.

Re: Leather supplies
- you really should try Lefflers, ask them for a sample offcut or two of saddle leather which is 4 to 5mm, or bridle butts 3.5 to 4mm or stirrup butts 4.5 to 5mm or rein backs, harness backs up to 5mm, or you can get what is called 'mens rumps', 5.5mmm which is for footwear.
Otherwise I have some offcuts from an old-fashioned briefcase, solid stuff about 3.mm, let me know.

I've got a couple of places here in Adelaide to check out tomorrow, so will see what they have.
If no good then I'll look interstate.
What colour is the briefcase leather you have, how big a piece/s do you have and last but not least how much you want for it?
Cheers.

Re: Leather supplies
The two best unmarked pieces are about 250mm x 350mm + and a few other smaller scraps, they are that shiny mid tan colour of the old concertina briefcases but could be stripped back a bit I guess. All I need is a PM with your address and I will take them to the Post Office on Thursday and get the postage rate and will then post them to you, no money needed mate. I have the remains of an old welding apron too in the shed somewhere, which is pretty thick, so will send the lot if I can find that and if you can use that much. You are welcome to it, good to see it used rather than wasted as I have dozens of unfinished projects in all sorts of materials which I never get around to! I was keeping this stuff for knife sheaths, arm protectors and quiver etc. but I am really unlikely to actually make them any time soon, if ever.
