Ungluing Isocyanate - SuperGlue. Part II
Good Evening All
Okay so you done the dumb thing and somehow managed to glue a couple of things together with Superglue that you did not want to. What next. The dumbies guide to resolving the problem.
1
Stop. Don't Panic and do not do anything rash.
2
Go and make some Coffee and clean a space on you workbench. Put some clean paper on the workbench.
Do not use the Dining Table or anything else that could be damaged! Be also aware that the Acetone will dissolve all sorts of things including plastic and French Polish!
3
Get a small brush. Those who are brave enough could try raiding the wifes/childrens art supplies.
4
Get hold of some Acetone.
The Safety Warning
Before you open the bottle. Read the safety instructions and note that Acetone is a nasty Chemical. Take adequate Safety precautions. Note also Acetone will de-fat your skin. Out with the Barrier Cream - yep, I've had Industrial Dermatitis.
5
Using the paint brush apply Acetone to the area were the Super glue has done its job. The Acetone will flow into small cracks etc. under capillary action. Wait 20 seconds or so and give it another coat. Pull the pieces apart. If it doesn't come easily apply some more Acetone.
6
Now that you have got it apart. Clean with a cloth moistened with Acetone.
7
Re-assemble everything.
8
Go and have a celebratory drink. A Cappucino is always a good choice.
You will have successfully been a "Klutz" and "de-Klutzed" yourself.

Good Morning Lou and "Wild Russian"
I think I have learned to sit back and have a coffee with these sorts of things It seems to assist me in not rushing in. And the Capucino afterwards is always a good reward.
I was originally going to lay into it with a bit of heat - propane torch. (See original post http://www.ozbow.net/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=3676
However Jeff suggested Acetone and it worked. I am almost tempted to try Mick's soak it in water method on a test piece to see if that works. (But I am little over ungluing Supoer Glue at the moment.)
I did not think about the heat gun - that would have been a much safer choice.
Anyhow, all has ended well and it will definitely be of use to other people - I know I am not the only Klutz in the worls.
I was fortunate in that I had some acetones in my arrow box. It is very good as a solvent for removing any oil etc. on Carbon shafts prior to fletching them.

For this you can apply some gentle heat with the ole gas stove. Grab insert with pliers and pull it out. Usually works like a charm.rory wrote:This doesn't work with removing inserts from the shafts though....

That would be horrible!!!A lady here in town reached into the fridge for some eye drops and got the super glue instead.
I flicked a drop off an arra into my eye many years ago now and it sure did burn. It was off to hospital and the next day I had to have it scraped off my eye. The specialist used a needle to do that too!!!
Not fun.
