Fun with leather

#1 Post by hubris » Sun Nov 14, 2004 8:21 am

Gday guys,

Well in my impatience waiting for my damn new bow to arrive I found myself making a back quiver to keep up my morale. Here's a couple of pics featuring some of Butchoman's nicely fletched and crested arrows.

The front of the quiver is made of 6mm cowhide and I've inscribed the opening verse of Homer's Odyssey. The back is 3mm leather with a icon of a middle ages Magyar horseman with bow on the back. I used a soldering iron to scribe the two surfaces.

Hmm, nice work mate! Love the horse - very artful, and the inscription shows good taste

My local saddler, who also happens to lecture in anthropology, written several books on the aboriginals of the Yass/Wee Jasper Region, and teaches napping! :D

He also once gave away a leather bound horn and sinew asiatic bow that a customer once gave him because he had no interest in it.

Good bloke, really helpfull, with a reserved enthusiasm.

I was able to buy offcuts, so the leather came to about $50 + tools etc.

Mate, I'm going to do you up a quiver like mine with:

"Who the hell is Homer!?!" and "Who the F$%K is Herodotus!?!" repeated and scribed across them

Homer was a ancient Greek poet who wrote two stories "The Iliad" and "The Odyssey". The stories are about 2800 years old.

Imagine a whole heap of greek warriors over 2600 years ago, all getting together to listen to poets tell these brave tales about their grandparents! :)

It wouldn't have been that different from bush poets coming into a pub and reciting funny old bush poems about everyones great grandparents... with everyone joining in, laughing, drinking.

Thanks Don. I'm working on a little foldaway rain cover for this model, and another design for a hip version. I'm enjoying learning a little about leather. Version 2.02 and 3.01

buford... heheheh...

If you ever get the chance I'd really recommend reading both the Iliad and the Odyssey - Penguin Classics, translation by Robert Fagles.

Both are great fun to read. They will make any Follywood blockbuster action moving look like a flacid version of "Little Women"!
